MY FISH IS BEING SUPER AGGRESSIVE HELP ME!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I had a johanni and anytime I added a new fish it was like insta-death... so I had to give him away.

i add new fish in one side of the tank and feed the fish on the other side. or turn lights off. when i didnt due that my mbuna's would bully the new fish around, but now they barely notice the new fish.

alrighty i pulled him out :( I have some small venustus i can throw in. you guys think they will be a bad idea?

No, venustus should be fine

Our venustus pretty much don't cause any problems. They will not back down however but for the most part the only problems we have is they make a snack outta new arrivals and fry.

We have one johanni left that we just cannot ctach ... been trying for a year now. If I ever do catch it I will toss it in the garden for ferts. It is an absolute terror in our tank and is prolly the smallest in that tank. Just plain evil.

Jeez, I wouldn't toss him in the garden, at least not yet. I'm not sure what your set up is, but it sounds like you have a second tank that you put him where he is not a bother to anyone. Just keep him there till some of the others get bigger and throw him back in and he might not be the BMOC anymore. This has worked well for me. Also, there is no such thing as too many africans in one tank to keep aggression down! Good luck and keep us posted on what happens.

African cichlids can be a pain in the ass for sure, ive got fish, traded them in for different ones and done the same again due to crazy agression and death. Realy its the choises of fish we make that is the couse of allot of it, i know most people think, "hey they are all from lake malawi so they should get on well" ( i used to be one) not really, its a big lake with many different habitats. I am going to my lfs tomorrow to get the right tankmates for my rostratus starting with 5 Moori aka blue dolphin cichlids as in the wild morri will school with rostratus.

With African cichlids it takes research and trial and error to find the right combination becouse lets face it, no one wants to watch a tank where there is constant bullying.

cheers and good luck-

In the wild mebbe moorii school with fossies. In our tank I have 4 fossies with 2 males ~12", and 4 moorii. The moorii just sorta hang out all day together not what I would call schooling. More like hanging out.

Johanni's are just nasty by nature. Auratus also but not as nasty as johanni's. I was able to trade back the one we were able to catch, another was flayed to pieces. I have wasted many saturday afternoons trying to capture this last one to no avail. When I do it will be a long dry time out. I have lost my patience with this devil and will never have one in my tanks again.

They just stress out the whole tank. And then bloat appears and others get caught up innit.
