Best bet would be to keep him solo or put him in a bigger tank and add the other fish first. so he will be out of his element, and basically the new kid on the block

I've never had an adult male venustus that wasn't eventually the alpha fish in the tank. The same can be said for other Nimbochromis. Like other large haps, they will eventually need a 6' tank.
Another possible companion for Fossochromis would be any of the blue-type Placidochromis (electra, phenochilus). They are also opportunistic feeders that do not sift, but follow Fossies or Taniolethrinops in the wild.
All of the Melanochromis are pretty much terrible.
