My Fish Room Log

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I traded the blood parrot pair for store credit at my favorite LFS; $60!!! Considering they were given to me, that's a huge bonus. I'm glad to have the tank space back too.

I really want this group of 10 red turquoise discus. It will round out my current fishy wants. I do want some blue botias and I'm probably going to stop by the LFS today to pick up my 5 gallon bucket and go ahead and buy the lot of yoyo loaches they have.

I absolutely hate having to deal with quarantine, but I know it's essential as I've found with the smaller pair of festae polluting my tank with ich. Treating with salt and temp increase now. Time to get that 36" UV working. I'm going to plumb it in such a way to make it portable from tank to tank.

Nothing like having to go into the LFS and buy 4 heaters. Got the old skool ones that you have to set, but they were cheap and good for small tanks. I never had one give me trouble once set. I need to hook up the freebie 300 watt I got today too.

Looks like there's a lot of coloring up in the port tank. Hopefully, they will spawn soon.

The big festae continue to have ich and not much of an appetite. Been treating with standard temp/salt with Aquarisol for a little boost. Bought 3 giant danios to stimulate them. The other pair is on the other side of the divider with Jaws and they are showing no signs of ich or appetite loss. Finally getting to hook the UV up tonight.

Got the giant danios and 5 yoyo loaches with part of the blood parrot store credit!

Aggravation:
Yesterday Used last of Prime
Petco only had 8oz bottle of Prime didn't look at price

LFS only had 8 oz bottle of Prime with 30% bonus. $10.99 Uggh...passed. And no Tetra Food Sticks for the festae :(

Today
LFS #3 Sucky place didn't have anything worthwhile
PetSmart only had 8 oz bottle of Prime without the bonus for $9.99 and only a small container of the Tetra Food Sticks...Pass

Petco had large Tetra Food Sticks and 8 oz bottle of Prime without bonus for $8.99 bought it

Favorite LFS
HAD every size of Prime even the $98 container and the 16oz for $14.99 :irked: They didn't have the Tetra Food Sticks, so I bought fish with credit and headed out

Home Depot pit stop quickly since I had fish in the truck. 25' 16 gauge holiday green extension cords $4.83 vs. 12' 16 gauge black extension cord $6.97!!! WTF!!! Both light duty, both 16 gauge. Go figure.

Been rearranging power strips, hooking up heaters to the 210, acclimating fish, and anticipating Saturday when the electrician will split the some of the fish room off the shared circuit with the dining room and kitchen. Uggh.

Discus come in tomorrow. They'll be temporarily in the 65 until I'm sure they are eating well.

I think I'm going to put the flagfish in with the small pair of festae and Jaws. I'll just have to watch him for fin eating. That's the only thing I don't like about them. Tiger barbs nip, while flagfish eat fins. Mean little buggers, but they do a number on algae.

The flagfish has to get out of the 210, so that the contents of the 90H and 65H can move to the 210. I don't have any known fin nippers in those tanks, but I'll have to watch them with the angels.

The 210 is going to get planted in a special way. I'm going to put my Eco-Complete in containers then put the container on something to elevate them. This will create big cave areas under the containers.

My main problem was that I didn't want to mix my eco-complete with the substrate that's in the tank. I may even use cat litter pans with the litter guard around the edge to keep the Eco-Complete in the container. The lights off the 110 will be moved to the 210 and the CO2 hooked up to the tank as well.

I need to make room for fish coming home with me from my friend Jack's Sunday after we drain the ponds and rearrange the 210. He already has an 18" deep kid pool set up and another one will be before Sunday. We'll also be able to put fish in the indoor alligator pond. He said the ones that are too big for the gators to eat, but I think I'm going to make sure the fence is up. They'll likely eat the fish I want. Jack invited over some other fish friends, so we're going to watch some fish footage and talk shop too. Should be a blast and yes, I'm bringing the camera this time.

Well, evidently there is a maximum wattage you can run on a 15 amp breaker before it trips constantly. Those 25' extension cords came in handy. As a temporary fix, I ran two of them to the living room and moved the 110 and 90H power to them. So far so good. A good test to see what's going to happen when the circuit is split.

Did a 50% water change on the 110 and didn't add any salt or Aquarisol. What I did add is what is in the following pics. Enjoy. I know I am.

It'll take a little time to zap them all, but it's better than the pair sitting there looking stressed. Even with just salt and heat, they were not happy. After I added Aquarisol, they were breathing heavy and listless. Keeping the temp up, but no salt or Aquarisol, with the UV. We'll see how it works.

The 10 red turquoise discus arrived today and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to Kurt (discushatchery on Aquabid) for excellent quality discus bigger than promised. I can't wait to get these guys home and acclimated.

Oh and late last night, I was working on some stuff in the fish room and had a nearly really bad incident happen. I had put one of the new old school Hagen heaters in the port tank, let it set for 20 minutes, plugged it in, turned the knob until it came on, and planned on checking it the next day. I cleaned a flat piece of slate of some sort to lean against the tank wall for the ports to have a place to hide. I put it in the tank and noticed the water was cool. I had just taken my hands out of the water, dryed them on my clothes, then turned the heater knob until it came on. To my dismay, I see water swirling around on the inside. I quickly unplugged and removed it. That could have been really bad for me and for the pair of ports. I'll be checking and even turning off power to the heaters before working in the tanks from now on.

Gotta love it. Sold a 65 that I got for free to a girl (hot girl at that) who has a bearded dragon. The tank had corner chips that prevented aquatic use and the top frame brace was melted through from a reptile light. I'm happy with her $65 and she's happy with the tank and reptile top.

40 Breeder Reef received 120 lbs. of free live sand and rubble. Hooking up the skimmer tomorrow. Debating on building or buying lights for it.

Discus are doing well after a little arrival stress scare. Good to know that they can take up to 48 hours to recover after shipping. All 10 are up and looking for food.

Using Aquarium Solutions Ich-X to treat the large festae pair since they haven't responded to salt/heat.

Had to move the port pair back to the 75 to use the 20H as a hospital tank.
