no the filter connected to the waterfall. if u look carefully u can see the "box" next to the waterfall. inside it has 2 differant types of coarse spong and lots of ceramic rings. the waterfall not only looks cool but it airates too. and its rated for a 500 gallon pond so its plenty enough for what i have.I not going to kid ya the maintance can be a little of a pain but its well worth it. i spend about an hour on saturday vacuuming the bottom and changing out water. It gets drain down just about half way then refilled
