I am starting to really like this fish. What do you guys think of the color? Hes showing more red as he gets older. I bought this fish from your average breeder/ wholesaler as a texas cichlid. Its pretty obvious or at least I think so that its not a pure texas cichlid. Hes really starting to get some size and attitude along with a hump starting to come in. Hes 8.5” at this time and 11 months old. He was 1” - 1.5” when I bought him in a group of 5.
Pics from yesterday.

Anyone have any thoughts on what this fish could be mixed with. I original thought he was just going to be a cyano carpintis mix. With the reds coming in I think maybe something else.

IMO it looks like there could be some black belt in there.

Cool fish - have wanted to keep another one of these but I had one 3” in a 180 with 4 much larger fish once like 10 years ago. Thing was an absolute murderous terror! Lol. Haven’t gone back since even though I’ve been tempted.

I'm not an expert in those two species but my minckleyi have red tips like that so it's not uncommon in Herichthys. I dont think its crossed with anything outside of the genus.
Im not talking about the red tips on the dorsal fin I am talking about his overall color. His fins and body color show allot of reddish tones. Cyano and carpintis have grey and olive colored bodies. You could still be correct tho that hes just a normal cyano carpintis mix. None of us will be able to say what he is but I like to see other peoples opinions and ideas.

Probably a failed attempt at someone trying to breed a red texas. There's loads on the market. No way of telling without accurate history on the fish.
Thats kinda what I was thinking my self. I also ordered convicts from the same place. One of the males was a convict parrot cross. So I know they have crossed fish that are accidentally mixed in or intentionally.
