My H. Cyanoguttatus/ carpinti

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One of the worst case scenarios I have heard about, is that H. cyanoguttatus has been introduced to the springs at Media Luna Mexico, where they are now hybridizing with Nosferatu labridens. The labridens is a beautiful canary yellow cichlid, that is quite distinct in its pure form, and the hybridization is creating dull non-distinct mutts.

Yes its a possible problem for every native species. I hate to see this type of thing happen. Sucks to know we will lose purity of native species.

I agree. It’s one thing to have captive raised hybrids either on purpose or by accident but to have these cichlids hybridizing in the wild is very disappointing.

I was getting ready to do a water change and noticed the JD was pushing his weight around. So I grabbed a short video of him.

Lol looks like they could use a good round with a Lazer pointer. Looks like they all got allot of excess energy to burn. Ever try a Lazer pointer? It hilarious to whatch fish act like cats and dogs just chasing it and trying to catch/eat it.
No I never tried anything like that. They are active fish and active while feeding going after food aggressively. They are all doing good and have the chain of command worked out pretty good. The carpintis and JD face off a little but they dont beat each other up.

I am starting to really like this fish. What do you guys think of the color? Hes showing more red as he gets older. I bought this fish from your average breeder/ wholesaler as a texas cichlid. Its pretty obvious or at least I think so that its not a pure texas cichlid. Hes really starting to get some size and attitude along with a hump starting to come in. Hes 8.5” at this time and 11 months old. He was 1” - 1.5” when I bought him in a group of 5.
Pics from yesterday.

Anyone have any thoughts on what this fish could be mixed with. I original thought he was just going to be a cyano carpintis mix. With the reds coming in I think maybe something else.

Pure cyano. I don’t know the exact catch location, but colors can vary like other cichlids. The spots are cyano w/ the small pearling vs larger spots of caprintis. I had a female much like yours. My experience w/ them is that they are very aggressive. Couldn’t keep that female w/ anything.
