My Herichthys Carpintis jornal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She’s cute. Looking for another female like this.

I got her from the Wet Spot same time I got Toni, year and a half ago now. She was less than an inch when I brought her home so went into a Plattys tank for about a year. Then into my 55.

Well I assumed wrong, I thought the pleco was doing this damage to the brances.View attachment 1345803

Nope I was wrong, caught Thor in the act. He must have some good chompers to do this.View attachment 1345804
It’s true. These guys have some crazy teeth. I had one when I was a kid that was about 10” or so and you can see them when they are bigger. Very mean, had to keep it in iso because it would kill everything else.

Ditto. They get very aggressive as they grow up. You might want to consider moving your bristlenose pleco for its safety.

I had a female carpintis who was like an aquatic buzz saw. I moved her from tank to tank as she got increasingly aggressive and started picking off her companions. Finally she landed in the M. festae and Red Texas tank. Caligula the Red Texas--who had shacked up with the dominant female festae--put a nearly immediate end to the carpintis.

I moved my pleco this morning. Poor thing is a lot more injured than I thought. She was on the front glass and could see some internal bleeding. 20181124_135023.jpg
Here is her jacked up dorsal fin.20181124_134953.jpg

So what do you think? Good water and hope for the best? She is eating so that's good right.

If she is eating pellets, maybe try to soak with probiotics. Maybe immune booster. It’s a good sign if she is still upright. Not so good when she tips into her side. Lol captain obvious here.

I find the Bn pleco to be so sensitive, I think I have lost 8 in the last year. One from predation by the jewels. Hope it pulls through.

Bristlenose plecos can be tough critters in community tank conditions but not in terms of being able to defend themselves from aggressive fish. They don't have the heavy armor plating or big cheek odontodes of some of the larger plecostemus species. If any fish with anger management issues decides to take them out a tiny bristlenose, there's not much the pleco can do but try its best to hide.

They are resilient though, so if she's not too badly injured she may very well pull through. Eating, moving around, still able to stick to the aquarium glass... all good signs.

Seachem StressGuard is great stuff for helping beat up fish to recover. It also helps prevent wounds from getting infected. I highly recommend it.

Pills, short for Pillsbury dough boy due to being paper white when we got her (another one of my sons creative names) is now in the 46bowfront, the HRP's with fry are not nice to say the least. No one is big enough to mess with her in the 46bowfront.

Good call. The HRPs would have finished what the carpintis started.

It seems as tho someone sneaks in while I sleep and gives Thor shots of adrenalin/hormones/meth.... for he is constantly chasing the three others.... the only time he stops is to eat or sleep when I turn the lights out at night. Tho I still hear spashes......
