Nice Job Mate. It could probably work better if you use Eheim Matrix media. Ceramic cylinders as well would work better.

Not 100% on the Eheim matrix media, but the scrubbies are way mroe effective than the ceramic cylinders. Stick witht the scrubbies, not only are they cheap, btu the are rated #1 or #2 in effectiveness.
 
I love projects that use materials on hand. "reduce reuse recycle" and all that.

Your design is simple and effective, keep it simple and you wont go wrong.
I might dig out my old protien skimmers and do the same thing.

Unles you force a bunch of scrubbies in thre, there is way to many "gaps" in the scrubbies which wont allow them to be better than the cylinders. If use forced more in there I would say yes.
