My Hotel Room 180gl Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ahhh they will never be the wiser. Like I said I'm only here another month, and in that time my aspirations are only to start cycling the filter. If I wind up going a little further and rescuing the TSN before then, well I've had the DND sign up for 2 weeks now without objections from anyone. I'll let them in to clean the room while it's still empty and as far as they know it's just a big ass bin. After that the DND goes up and it's showtime.

OK, I started this in the setup thread, so if having two threads is some sort of problem for any reason, mods, I think the DIY area is more appopriate.

This may seem slightly ridiculous, but here we go. I'm in the middle of a 800 mile move, and for the last two months I've been in a hotel room. Now, I need to setup some temporary accomodations for my fish when I move them, because setting up their tanks in the new location will take a while, and they need a place to live while the transition happens. So, I got myself a 180gl tub, and I'm getting it fishworthy. Now... I have only the tools I brought with me to fix my car. I had no truck to bring this thing to the hotel, so I had to hitch a ride part of the way, wash it at the car wash, and carry it into the hotel through the back door. I have no idea what I'm going to tell housekeeping when they come in to clean my room.

Here it is, as it was when I just got it into the room:

put a light inside it, cover the top with a nice piece of wood and tell them its your coffee table

Nice :p It's a bit tall for a coffee table... maybe a low dining table?

My plan for this arrangement has changed somewhat. I'm moving out of this hotel in a week or so. (15th). Rather than try to cycle my massive bucket filter in time, I am going to bring fish and filter at the same time. Currently my 200gl tank has a big pleco and a 2' silver aro in it, and it's filtered by an FX5. The plan, should it work out, is to put the fish in a large cooler or rubbermaid in the back seat of the truck, and place the FX5 on the floor, filtering the cooler during the drive. It's either that or just bring the filter along, and hope the BB doesn't die off during the 13 hour trip. When I get here, i'll acclimate the fish and transfer them to the tub along with the FX5. There will likely still be a mini cycle, but it will hopefully be minimized.

Unfortunately this is going to be a MAJOR undertaking, as I hope to tow a U-haul trailer with my 600gl tank and most of my tools and furniture in it during the same trip. I will also be bringing my brother to keep me awake, and two cats!!

the plan may change though. I will have to make more than one trip to retrieve fish this way. Maybe I will be better off waiting on moving the fish, in which case I will do my best to fishless cycle the tub before retrieving all the fish in one trip.

GOOD LUCK with everything man hope you dont lose any fish.....im making a tirp of just 5hr away and im trying to figure out how to keep the fish alive during the weekend and the trip....i live in AZ and picking up fish in CA going up on a fri and coming home mon...again fingers crossed for ya man

if you just bring the filter and no fish than go get a bunch of rosy reds throw them in there. they will help and if they die because of the water then you didnt kill ur aro

hmmm, careful careful. Even empty, hotel staff sees pipes and fittings and tubs etc, theyre gonna be thinking clandestine labs (meth labs) etc. You may be explaining yourself to more than just hotel staff.

Well the problem there is then nothing will be left filtering the Aro's tank.

The more I think about it, it makes more sense to bring a bit of populated media from home with me on this trip, and no fish. I can get some fat goldfish here and drop them in to help with cycling. I will have so much going on for this drive, I just don't think it's wise to include the fish. That way next time I go (hopefully soon, before winter makes it too difficult) I can bring all the fish at once and put them in tanks that are already set up.
