My Idea and should I go for it Now

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My advice is unless you plan to mate 2 American cichlids, NEVER keep 2 American cichlids together. The dominant one will always chase and make life miserable for the weaker cichlid. I learned this the hard way. My first setup was a JD + firemouth, JD was too aggressive so I returned it. I then did Pike + firemouth but pike was too aggressive so I returned it. It wasn't until I put more than 3 cichlids in the tank that the aggression died down.

What I would do if I were you, is get 6 small jack dempseys, at 1-2". Let them grow until 4-5" and pick your favorite to keep. Single juvenile cichlids tend to be shy if not in a group. After 4", you could try to keep come swordtails with your Jack for entertainment. Sometimes they will eat the swords but usually they are too lazy to be bothered actually catching them if well fed.

Now this is a good idea!!!

welcome!

sounds like you have lots of good advice here flowing,

GL!

When young they are skittish, so either fish will help it be comfortable. Friends aren’t the word though, more like future punching bags.
But should I star the tank with just the 1 fish Jack Dempsey will he be ok as a 2in solo
Because I can’t just get 5-6 as suggested below I couldn’t rehome them is the problem there

I don’t mind the aggressive part it’s just what is best from jump for my Jack Dempsey basically I guess as suggested I could have a little bit of community fish while he’s young for company but when he gets bigger well I probably won’t have them after that

Although I can’t rehome that many JD so I would probably be putting 2 sword tails and probably a small school of black neon tetra they start a little bigger than he can decide who stays do you think that’s ok???

Welcome aboard

I know a few years ago many were having problems with the Electric Blue Jack Dempsey due to poor genetics hopefully issues with them has improved. I personally had one that survived for a little over 2yrs. Also don’t give your Clown Loach away sell it they are not cheap especially large ones.
Thanks for this my research confirmed your information about the electric blue and I appreciate it since I have chosen to go with the just a Jack Dempsey
And again thank you very much you information was extremely helpful!!!
