My Idea for my new tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was thinking of also adding 1-3 white crappies and/or 1-3 Sacramento perch.
The list would look look this

120 gallon
3 bluegills
1 longear
1-3 black crappie(s)
1 tire track eel
1 lake chubsucker
1 warmouth
1 Florida brown bullhead
1-3 white crappie(s)
1-3 Sacramento perch.

55 gallon

2 or 3 black madtoms
1 dollar sunfish
5 central mudminnows
1 central stoneroller
1 pirate perch
3 creek chubs

Post any problems with this setup.

I would have kept the Dollars sunfish instead of the Longear (unless your getting the Northern Longear sp) in the 55g. and I would also have either Creek chubs or Mudminnows, not both (they are both slender predators ); in the 120g crappie like to be in groups even if their in Structure, I would choose either crappie or Sacramento Perch....not both, or your bioload in your tank will be overwhelming and youll have to do water changes 2-3 times a week and have double filtration.

if you're talking a standard 120G (72"x18"), the crappie have potential to get as long as your tank is wide. unless your sure you can upgrade the tank, I'd avoid the crappie.

I was going to get one white crappie, one perch, and might get another crappie. I would get rid of the eel and I would get creek chubs for the 55. Or I might just keep the eel in the 55 and the long ear. They never fight. I already have the long ear (was my 1st native). I might keep the lake chub-sucker in the 55 and get a Golden red-horse or a white sucker ( i Would prefer the red-horse ) Either would be in 120. Also I might get a 150 gallon instead.

I wouldn't add more crappies or perch to your 120gal tank since you got a black crappie, a bluegill and a warmouth already and you are planning to add a brown bullhead which get absolutely larger. Unfortunately the brown bullhead may find your longear sunfish to be tasty which force you to house a longear to your 55gal.

Apparently my past 3-4 posts have not been put up...
I have decided on (unless it wont work)
150-200 gallon
3 bluegills
1-2 black crappie
1 lake chubsucker
1 warmouth
1 Florida brown bullhead
1 white crappie
1 Sacramento perch.

55 gallon

2 or 3 black madtoms
1 pirate perch
3 creek chubs
1 Longear
1 tire track eel.

I might have missed a few things. Use this for your responses

Leo, I think that you will better off with few fish in 150-200 than what you have on the list. The brown bullhead may will eat the chubsucker and grows larger up to 20-24" quite regularly tho they most likely reach 16" or so in the aquarium. That means there won't be much room for other fishes if you are set with a brown bullhead. I would toss Sacramento perch idea out in the window and just limit to one crappie in 150-200 depends on what is size of crappie. If you want have a chubsucker, stick with crappie, bluegills and warmouth minus bullhead.

I forgot to say that the chub-sucker would be in the 55 gallon.
150-200gallon
3 bluegills
1 black crappie
1 war-mouth ( or in 55)
1 Florida brown bullhead
1 white crappie
1 Sacramento perch.

55 gallon

2 or 3 black madtoms
1 pirate perch
3 creek chubs
1 Longear
1 tire track eel.
1 Lake chub-sucker

I Will make some tweaks to this. The war mouth in the 55 seems risky...

Are creek chubs schooling fish? I think they are bur I just want to make sure. Also could I keep a log perch with them?

I have 4 creek chubs in a 75 gallon with longears. They are schooling fish. They are currently about 4-5 inches right now. I just tried to out in a few bristlenose plecos that were two to three inches each. They are the two smaller ones. And bristlenose are not small fish. I think you should get some bluehead chubs. Jonah's aquarium sells then occasionally. They are much cooler looking. Also, bluegills colors don't necessarily pop like some other sunfish. Wouldn't you rather have something with better color like a pumpkinseed? They max out at around 10 inches or so and they would be much better suited for a fish tank. Just my opinion though.
