I've had my male jd for a year and a half now in a 55 gal by himself. All he does is hide. I can't even watch him eat, have to turn the lights off for him to come out of his cave. I bought him a female ebjd which he didn't care for at all, gave that a few months and now have her in a separate tank. What can I put in there with him to make him not so sucky? He must be miserable... maybe a con? or a fm? some giant danios? filtration is 2 ac 110's and a eheim canister made for up to 90 gal tanks.

What size is he?
I guess its just his personality, and unluckily you got a very shy fish. Maybe try taking out the caves and other hiding places until he is used to the open, It might stress him out too much though. I would wait until a more experienced member replies.

thats a ton of filtration for a 55. there may be alot of water current that he doesnt like so he stays in the cave. 1 fish in a 55 all you need is 1 ac 110. but if you try that and it does not help then yeah add something that he can come out and give a chase to once in awile another fish should deff make him perk up.
convict sounds like a good idea

I wouldn't add a convict, I'd add some dither fish like giant danios... It's funny, sone JDs hide all the time while others won't ever stop begging for food...

sure try to find one already 4 inches. that should get him going. he may chase the crap out him for the first day to show the con whos boss but hopefully after that he will roam your tank stating to the con that its all his. thats your best case scenario. worst case he kills con. thats why you would have to keep a close eye on the situation for awile.

I would add a few fish and maybe change the decorations around. It sounds funny but sometimes they get scared and hide when they are in too large of a tank, I've raised thousands of jd's and have seen it happen.

A school of giant danios might draw him out.I think fishguts may have something there though.

thanks everyone. looking for a decent sized con :D I would be shocked if he killed the con, since hes such a weeny to my anyhow. I'd probably like my jd a lot more if he did kill the con. I know it sounds bad but damn when it's so skittish for nearly 2 years, it'd make me feel like I own a manly fish not a wuss lol.
