sometimes your set up may have a lot to do with it to.
 
you should try adding more south american cichlids nothing smaller than 4 inches, filters can stay, build multiple caves from rocks from creeks or lakes works great, jaguars, green terrors, red devils, red terrors, an oscar is good to cause it always eat so the jd can join him as well. if that dont work dont buy a ebjd, get a normal female jd

the OP only has a 55g, please read everything before posting and make sure that your advice is relevant to the size tank that he owns, i do agree with deco though, how you decorate tank can have big effect on their behavior can you post some pics of your tank so we can see how you have it set up now?

i use them in a lot of my tanks .. but the oscars are just to big now.. they will gulp up 3 or 4 at a time .. but they work well for my dats to chase around .. and they jags had some too but they picked away until nothing was left .. but all my fish are active .. the red hooks work in the oscar tank now .. they are to big and to fast for them to mess with .. but they still try ..
