the bass is going to grow faster than the gar, and the bass will, should spit out the gar if it decides to eat it, or try. the gar should be safe in a 55. how often does the bass eat? in the wild they eat one large meal a week and nibble the rest. what your doing works cause he is alive but i am just curious. i never got mine to eat pellets, so i just kept a few shiners in there. you can get them by the pound here for pennies, and he ate those for a year.

ok jw because like i said hes giving me the gar. the bass eats around 1 fish a day or every 2 days if its a goldfish.. if hes goin for the ruby minnows most ina day is 4. yea im aware of the shiners we catch big cats here in Nc with those. theres a petsmart about 3 blocks from my house an they have the rubys and comet golds for 10 cents a piece. he grew fine and loved nightcrawlers when he was smaller. but i wanted to change his diet slowley, this may sounds weird but he seems more active and after eating live fish. he doesnt just sit at one end of the tank you know.. :D

****update***** woke up this morning, everyone of the fish are gone except one ruby minnow.. is this cannot be normal eating habbits... or can it?? hes never eating like this.. i assumed he would eat less since hes in a bigger tank.. could this be spontaneous or territoral eating?

i dumped a dozen shiners a day in for my bass and they are twice the size of the rubys. he will go through a lot more food than that, trust me, and that is what i meant by "keep him fed"

first off the tank is to small, 2nd that is a largemouth bass. instead of buying tha 55 you should have bought a small kiddie pool or somthing untill you could have got a larger tank.

Looks like a washed out LMB probably due to poor water quality and poor diet. Putting a 6" gar in with a 12" LMB isn't the best Idea. It might take only a matter of seconds or minuets before you see a LMB with a belly full of gar. LMB will eat any fish that will fit in their mouths and sometimes those that don't.

i always keep him fed. i can usually tell when he gets hungry because he wil start following my hands around the tank and go back and forth in a almost spastic manner. ph is around 7-7.5 a buddy of mine is moving out of his dorm room this week and has a 6 inch florida gar that hes giving me. im thinking this would be an ok tank mate? if not ima toss him in the 29 gallon i have until i get the funds for a 250 i found
good to see you found a bigger tank, I didnt read the whole thing earlyer I had to get to work. also that gar will be toast at that size. If you where to get it keep it in the 29. then when you get the 250 put the bass in it and move the gar to the 55. The gar should out grow the bass if given lots of food and warm water.
