Ryan, in all fairness to Jags, it all depends on what kind of operation you want to run. The store he is refering too IS highly overpriced. They had a "reputation" for being the best and I guess that has gone to their heads (and pricing). The other store we have been refering to has been around for 40 years, has plenty of competition, and is thriving. They are definately a no frills, mom and pop operation with good stock, great prices on everything from tanks, dry goods and livestock. They always have new stuff coming in and it sells quickly. You really have to go there weekly to see what came in because it sells that quick. They definately do their buisness by volume, price it well and move it out fast (which they do). Also, if you a regular there, they will work with you even further on pricing. Just recently for example, I picked up wild green terrors from peru for 4.99 each or 3 for 12. Sajica for 6.99 each or 3 for 15. 2.5 inch Vieja argentea for 6.99 each 3 for 15. He had small, maybe 2 inch red tiger motas for 6.99 each. Wild green sevs for 4.99 each and so on. I spoke with the owner numerous times and being he has been in the buisness so long, he has alot of connections in south america and asia so he imports direct and passes the saving on to the customer. Let me tell you, I was in there this weekend and they were BUSY, and people were buying. I actually drive 32 miles to go there and its worth it.They were running a sale on large tanks a year ago and you ould get a 125 with metal stand for $275..unheard of. Even now, its $350. I paid way more than that for a 90 gallon 2 years ago from a store more local (before I started going there).MY point being, If you are trying to put one over on your customers, by overcharging, especially in this economy, you wont be around long, however even in this economy, the local LFS can still do well if your pricing is fair and customer service is good, people will support you and I belive aquahut is living proof of that.

im glad someone from the island can make some sense of this. thank you. don't get me wrong I like country critters they have a great looking store but ther prices are literally jacked up 3-5 times the price they should be.

Ya a lot of places can be crazy, but its supply and demand. My friend has a lfs and he prices some fish ridiculously just so ignorant people wont even try to buy them(mostly fish that will get huge and require special care)

Im glad some stores use their nogin at least. A store near my house sells RTCs for 15$....

Maybe speak to the owner? Chances are he or she may not even know. Perhaps see if you can discuss your problems/concerns with them? They probably are like many places who hire first time workers.

It's tough to run independent LFSs. They have to compete with big chains for common fish, which they provide 10-day no question asked return policy advantage. For dry goods, they have to compete with discount mail order suppliers. So indies have to come up with uncommon species that are unavailable in Chain stores, but then they have to face competition from auction events, mail order breeders, and bashing from forum posters. So if you don't support your LFSs, they will soon go extinct. It's different when you buy fish in bags then picking out fish and observing them in tanks.

i think that the people that are aggravated with me for starting this thread are envisioning me bashing on some run down little fish shaq that's all poor and trying their hearts out to stay afloat . don't romanticize it. the place is huge, upscale and booming. their prices are jacked up 30-75% higher than they should be

THEY are the ones putting the little well run local fish stores outta business.its my region if any one knows it its me. this place has the other local independant places by the balls.

when there is a store less than 20 minutes away that sells the same fish for about 1/3rd the price cant someone say something atleast on a forum without being looked at as a basher of some sort. ANDICCA frequents the same places as me. he said it its called trying to get over. its about the moola ching ching if they could sell it to you for a grossly high price they will benefit and that's all its about 4 them. I sort out the b.s. I go there ALL the time they wont work out a deal they want the price and that's it. they had a tank full of 3 inch flowerhorns listed for like 25.99 or something like that. my friend picked one out and he goes wait this ones 39.99 (it was literally a centimeter bigger than the others) i told him screw it bro its not worth it and he ended up getting one from petland for like 6.99.

Hello; If the fish shop charges more than you think the fish are worth, then do not shop there. A shop 20 minutes away with better prices should have a chance to do better business by virtue of the better prices.
It is not clear how a shop with outrageous prices can run other shops with equivalent stock and lower prices out of business.

In the past few weeks I have been shopping for an automobile. The dealers so far have asked more for their cars than I think they are worth. I told one dealer that for his sake I hope someone comes along and pays the price they want. I was dissapointed in not getteing a car for my price, but it is their car and they can ask anything they wish. If enough people are willing to pay their price they will stay in business. At some point if I do not find a dealer to take my offer I will have to decide how much I want a new car.

In your case there seem to be other shops around with prices that suit you better. Shop there and boycott the one you do not like.

well yeah thats the point . i may go in there from time to time but the reason i dont actually BUY anymore fish from them is because im not gonna lose money for no reason.
its a great place overall but the prices are rediculous.

I´m really lucky with my lfs, due to some big expensive purchases I did there now I get discounts for anything I buy there and instead of them reselling me the fish that people leave there If they know it´s a type of fish I like they give me call and give me the contact of the owner so I can get it faster.

LFS are by and large a dying breed.

The cost and overhead of running a brick and mortar fish store, especially in an area with high rent, is significant. Downward cost pressure from box stores and the Internet have pretty much wiped out margins.

We're pretty close to having no LFS in the Washington, DC area. That's likely to be the case in a lot of the country!
