Yeah, most likely genetic - though i have seen on youtube - an arapaima with white patterns. Overhere these are called white-rose pattern, while the orange/red is red-rose pattern.

How long did you have your gigas for? Mine grew to almost 3' is less than a year! the growth was quite explosive and mind-boggling!!!

and where did u get them? im asking, cause if you got it at a fish store, its prolly bred to be pretty where as a fish farm is breeding them to grow as much as possible with the crapiest foods they can give it. or not so much crappiest, but least cheapest amount.
