His color looks like a large majority of the red devils I have seen at petsmart lately. Same gold and black mix and size range. However, his body is much more midas shaped than the ones around here. These devils actually have the devil lips and less thick appearance. I've also seen some petsmarts flowerhorns, which look nothing like this guy.
I can sympathize dealing with the confusion. At a local petsmart, I recently saw a tank clearly marked and picturing a red texas, but contained within was a greyish fish with almost no markings. The shape didn't match up with any cichlid I had ever seen. I assumed it was a petsmart flowerhorn in the wrong tank. However, the fish guy insisted it was a red texas that would get all the markings and color when it got older.
