After living with one for 5 months. I have made up my mind blood parrot cichlids should have never been created.

Do not get me wrong I love my BP named Hick-Up. He is so cute and he reminds me of a muppet. Also I am so very glad I have him. My aquarium would not be the same without him. I smile everytime I see him.

He is my first BP and more than likely my last. I never say never, but I do not see myself ever getting another one.

I have Hick-Up in with an Oscar named Grudgetta, a featherfin catfish named Al-E-Kat, and a rubberlip pleco named Boo Boo Kitty. They all live together peacefully in a 100 gallon aquarium, But all is not great.

Everyone gets lots of food except Hick-Up. It is not that he is not feed nor is it that he does not have enough time to eat. It is that he simply can not eat. I put crickets and minnows and worms and he can not catch them with his mouth to eat them. He is also so very very slow so slow that Grudgetta ends up eating them all. Grudgetta is growing so very very fast and little Hick-Up is not growing at all. I read that BP's grow slow and it is no wonder, seeing how they can not eat.

All Hick-Up gets to eat are pellets and he has to struggle to eat them. Also again he has enough time to eat. It is that he can't eat he will spend 3 to 4 mins on a cricket or worm with me cheering him on, but he can not get his mouth around them to save his life, then after a while Grudgetta will come along and eat it from him, then he just follows grudgetta around like a sad puppy eating anything that shoots out of her gills :(. And you can forget him eating a minnow all together they are way too fast and he ends up just pushing them around with his mouth.

It is so sad :(. I mean he is cute and makes me smile, but watching him eat is so sad. IMO what they are doing is cruel. I do not see how Hick-Up is ever going to grow.

I am not looking for a debate. They are here so they deserve love and a home, but again IMO they should have never been.

Also maybe I would not have noticed this and I would feel different if all I have ever had was a tank full of BP's only.

One thing, you never mix a competitive fish with a slower competitive fish. Without BP, flowerhorn would never exist. I'm happy they existed. And I know you don't want a debate, but a thread like this is unavoidable for a debate. Might even go down the wrong road like a lot of other threads too...:D

i bought 2 myself, never going to buy them again they always got sick and never could eat right just to many problems

I have 8. 3 are in a tank together and they all have normal mouths having no problem eating. I also have a much larger one in the tank that has the parrot mouth, she did struggle to eat thats why I switched over to sinking pellets so now she is not getting out competed. Its all about how you go about the situation, cater to the lowest factor.

my belief is that the deformed-mouth ones should never exist, but i like the ones with normal mouths. they can eat much better, and because of that, they have more energy and can actually compete. i'll post a pic i found of a parrot cichlid skull...

Never liked them myself but they do seem to have a cool personality. I could never get past their weird faces and unclosable triangular mouths.

This is the same skull in all three pictures. this (deformed mouth) cichlid should never have existed...

I did research and lots and lots of research and I was told on here and other places that BP's make good tank mates for Oscars. Also I never knew that Without BP's flowerhorn would never be, so I guess you are glad.

I do feed Hick-Up first and sinking pellets the best. I just hate that is all he gets to eat when you can clearly see he wants crickets, worms, and minnows and more.
