Sad story, But your absolutely correct. They never should have been put on the market.
They are breed for their anatomical deformities rather than selective breeding. Let me try to define the difference between a mutation and deformity. When you breed/inbreed the best to the best, you get better. When you breed the biggest to the biggest, you get bigger. This is natural selection, Unnaturally, which means on a cellular level your altering genetic DNA code to improve, or mutate. This code doesnt always assemble in the correct order or correct balance, This has the tendency to create deformites. As a breeder its your job to not deform them or disfigure them or have them look broken. It is unhealthy for the hobby and in every sense plain weird.
On one hand they have contributed to the modern flowerhorn, But on the other hand are the reason many people dislike flowerhorn. Its a catch 22.
Truth is, the fish dont need to be this way. Breeders like Mr. Chen of Rarefish or Happy breed have all but perfected creating healthy stable BP type fish without the deformities. Hopefully someday people will realize this and stop buying them, or have a ban on them, because if people are buying them, The breeders will keep making them.
Chris, They just havent grown into their mouth yet.
To the OP- There are things you can do to make sure your BP is getting the correct nutrition. Dont have his food source rely on what comes out the Oscars gills.
