My Mollies had babies!!!!!!!!!! YAHOO!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i used a plastic cup to move them and i put 1 tablespoon of salt for the fry tank which is 2.5gals i dont net the fry coz i know it would kill them instantly.

i hope i get a healthy 2nd batch.

I net fry all the time, never lost one.

If you've got your fry tank set up and the water is all good, try putting some plants in and somewhere for the fry to hide.
Then transfer the mother molly into the fry tank and let her give birth there, then remove her when she's done - this is much easier and safer than trying to catch and transfer the fry from another tank, and they are born in the water conditions that they are going to live in, so there less chance of stress.
Don't overdo it with the salt, a little will do.
In fact, a touch of salt and a slight rise in temperature will induce your mother to give birth.
When the fry are born feed them baby brine shrimp. One of the main problems with feeding flake food straight away is that it's very easy to overdo it in the first week and pollute the tank. Live food at least stays that way until the babies have had a chance to eat it!

Good Luck!

P.S. Livebearer fry are tougher than you think - I've moved 20 - 30 Platy fry by netting them in the last few weeks and they are all doing well!

my mollies dosent seem to breed anymore.. i never see any fry in the adult tank..

fry net? i see.. but do u think the plastic cup didnt work too well? i mean do u think they died coz i moved them?

I doubt moving your molly fry will have killed them, those little guys are quite tough that way. Livebearer new borns are equal in development to 2 week old fry of most other species. More likely the change in water or temperature...
Was the fry tank well cycled? Fry are quite sensitive to water quality...
The other possibility was overfeeding. They need such tiny amounts of ground flake food when they are born that it's very easy to put to much in.
Again, go down the baby brine shrimp route for the first couple of weeks. That'll do the trick...and the same old advice- only as much as they can eat within a few minutes.
Little but often is the key.
Good luck on the next batch...

well yea i think i overfed them.. but im not really sure.. the aquarium was very well cycled. i guess i overfed them.. since i crushed the flakes i thought it wasnt too many so i added a bit more.. dang! stupid me!!

about the next batch i was just wondering why they're not having any babies anymore.. i kept on looking at the adult tank everyday but i dont seem to see any fry... could this be that my male cant pound the females pussies anymore? LOL could my male be impotent? LOL

Aha....Hee Hee... the male can't pound the pussies... good one!
Most livebearer females will retain packets of sperm from any male they've been with for up to 6 months, so they don't need to be at it every day for the female to get pregnant!
How long since the last spawning? It usually takes about a month for the females to generate another batch of fry....
That should give you time to sort out a brine shrimp hatchery.

On a personal note, since I'm new here, why not check out
