My MONSTER Mixed Pygo Shoal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
plum im so very happy you responded to my thread. ive wanted to do a mix shoal in my new 300, i was ordering all of the fish before i had it delivered ( we set it up thursday sump isnt done so no water yet) so i have 11 baby caribe, ive been babying these guys since they were .5 inches so they really are my little babys, i didnt believe they were even caribe when i got them, but anyway i put alot of time into these 11 kepping them fed 4 times a day! crazy water changes ect.

so then i was reading an arcticle online i think it was from p fury, the guy said he would advise not to mix pygos because it is unnatural. but isnt living in a tank un natural as well? lol so i thought if i added some piraya all my expensive babies would be eaten. my dream was crushed:(

so i made the thread looking for someone who has kept a mixed shoal. im very thankful that you said somethiing because i was seriously considering only doing caribe in my 300. but now its going to mixed baby!!!!!!!!! and the reason its going to be mixed is because of your 720..:D

illl deff be needing some more info once i get the tank started so now i know who to pm, im anthony by the way nice to meet you plum.:clap

Thank you all for the commentary.

I want a tank like that...but don't think I can get it into my house. Next house----walk out basement with a big ass door~!!!

I was forunate in that I built my home, and thus set up drain holes around my basement for the tank room, and also had them pour the concrete floor early so that I could bring both my large tanks in the basement, as they would not fit at any point after this (other is a 960G). One big mistake I made in my planning was yes - not having a walkout basement. If you are ever going to build, and are a monster keeper, I think that this is must.

Yes, they are not all found in the same river, though if this fact does not bother you than keeping them together is no big deal. I have done so on smaller scales over the years, and on a large scale as you see through the video.

Not sure I read correctly, but hope you are not adding .5 inch fish with 5" fish (piranha) - do let me know if this is the case, if not, forget my misreadings.

Nice to meet you also - Name is Sean.

no sorry i type too fast, i bought my caribe at .5 now there about 3 inches and pretty chubby, and i want to eventually mix them with five 4-5 inch piraya and 2 six inch caribe. oh and 1 five inch red belly, i have no idea how im going to put them all together? im stumped

Tony,

I added my 4" piraya together with my caribes when they were only 2-3" inch and there wasn't any problem. your 300G will be big enough so I don't think the size difference are too significant between the caribes and pirayas, however you may still want to fatten them up a bit to match with your two six inch caribes. just power feed them, they should be close enough in size when you get your 300G running and cycled. just add more hiding spots and plants, etc.

I remember you said that the lfs told you better not use sand for your 300G, but looks like Sean's 720g has sand in there, you can ask him to see how his experience is when sand in such large tank.

Awesome

OK good. I think you should be fine, especially if you are allowing them to grow for a few more months. It's really hard to tell, and no one knows for sure, but can certainly set up the tank in a way that allows them the best chance.

Yes, the famous LFS. They mean well, but I don't put to much value into what most of the staff has to say. I like sand. I find it simple to clean, as it keeps all the waste on top. I use normal play sand, and have used this over the years. Not only is it very natural looking and works well to keep clean, but it is very cheap - not often that somethings works great and is cheaper than the alternatives! Play sand can affect the PH if I remember right, though my water out of the tap is 8.4/8.6 so I don't worry.

I have a 240G that I used Pool Sand in (lighter color) I can send you pics or post a video if you want to see what that looks like. It works gret as well, though not as compact as the play sand, meaning dirt can find it's way through = more gravel vacs through the pool sand......

If you set up your power heads correctly, most of the debris will either float into your sump, or find its way to one side of the tank... making cleaing very easy.

Some persons knew I was looking for the tank and sent me the add in their local Cragslist. I paid $1800USD and cost me about $300 USD to make the trip (about 700 miles)

The tank needed some buffing and other work, though was pretty simple even for me - a 25 year old salesman.
