Any amount of ammonia is bad and causes stress! Change 50% of the water and u should have .12-3ppm.

2 kinds of bb

Bb that converts ammonia to nitrite

Bb that converts nitrite to nitrate

Thus making water changes a neccesity to rid of nitrates!

Yes I know. I did a water change. But there is no fish in there of course because it is still cycling. I am not too worried about the ammonia because doesn't that start the cycle?

Also the tank is still cloudy. What pad do I use? A Fine Filter Polishing Pad or a Fine Water Polishing Pad? Or both? And how many? And which tray do I put it/them in, bottom, middle, or top? Thanks in advance

Ammonia spikes will cloud the tank, after ur bb that converts it into nitrite is established it should subside.

I thought you already had fish in it! Phew!!!

A polishing pad is useless since its likely ammonia causing the cloudy water, so just keep on cycling, the ammonia needs food so drop some flake food or a raw shrimp in, should help it go quicker.

A good mfker will tell you that carbon is only good for taking out meds or clear water and no smell, the trick is: fill ALL baskets w/ bio max 1.5gallons in all (5-6) boxes, this way you will house alot of BB and when the water pulls threw it the waste wil break down faster and keep your water sparkly! I run my fine filter pad at the very top so my bio media stays cleaner longer!

Yea that might be why it is still cloudy. But it was cloudy as soon as I started filling it up because of the gravel. It was very dusty and apparently I didn't rinse it enough.

Haha no I didn't add fish yet, this is my third tank I know better than that haha.

Ok thanks I'll add some flake flake food.

And I'll try adding a fine filter pad at the top thanks

You could gravel vac a bit to try clear the water. Otherwise it will most likely clear on its own.

Gravel vac? Its not even cycled??? Ammonia spike < 3-4ppm will def make water not clear! Once both bb are established the tank will be beautiful and ready for fish poo!

Even if you didnt rinse the gravel thourghly an fx5+ac110 combo will clear that up in a matter of 45 min imo

Just try to have a laminar (smooth) current so it pushes debris into siphons!

I was wondering the same thing myself. And ok sounds good haha.

Well the tank was cloudy for 24 hours with the fx5 running before any ammonia was added to the tank. This gravel was very dirty.

Ok thanks

I think I am going to buy seachem stability. If I do it will be here Friday. Will it be too late to start using it? If so, as long as I keep on schedule for dosages for 7 days I can add fish after the first day right?

His tank has been cloudy since the 7th. And as he said its been like that since he filled it, that was before he even added the ammonia to it. So of course it's most likely from the gravel.
Do a good vac man. As for the stability, it won't be too late because you can use it on a completely none cycled tank. I would keep feeding the tank though so stability can kick in quicker since your tank is already started the cycle. Stability is basically bacteria in a bottle, you can add fish while your using the stability. Just shake the bottle very very well before using.

Here is a updated pic:

The driftwood decoration was broken when I bought it. I got a discount on it but now I'm starting to think it could hurt my fish. Here is the crack:

Will that harm my fish? Especially the plecos.

My Seachem Stability will be here tomorrow so I will probably buy a few fish sometime next week.
