If you like colorful and semi aggressive/peaceful look into maybe making a tank of all MALE larger cichlids. Yes, you can't do many in a 125, but you get the best of both worlds, and you can add bichirs as well.

And if that's the road you go- get them small and grow them up together.

I have a Jag, Midas, Flowerhorn, and 2 Red Terrors together in a 180 with bichirs. They are all best buddies.

If you want great colors and passive fish, rainbows are beautiful and school really nicely. you could do a great school in a 125.

I would say a gulper cat but they aren’t very good community fish maybe some angelfish would be cool, I have 3 and I absolutely love them
