My new 620 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree w/ egon. Get a second pump incase the one fails. Also a 3x turnover rate is kinda weak....? I run 2 quiet one 6000's on my 225 for about a 10x turnover rate. Cichla and rays are messy. Ohh....nice kelberi and tig.

Thanks.
I have talked Pretty often with Brian directly and I agree he is not to pushy and still very interested in the sale. I'm completely happy with the tank. The sump on the other hand has a few issues that need to be worked out but Brian has been on top of most issues to get them resolved. The main problem I have is the flow rate of 1800 gal. Per hr.
Which Brian says is adequate BOR this size tank. But tends to worry me because we originally talked about having 8x turnover but because their was a miscalculation on head pressure I'm running at 2.5 to 3x turnover.
I'm not sure if it would help increase the flow but if it would I would have had bigger piping run on the plumbing and up the returns.
Currently all the plumbing is 3/4" all the way up to the top of the tank.

Beautiful setup!

In regards to your flow issues, it's not the pump, it's your plumbing that is causing problems. To get more flow, you need larger pipes/tubing. Reeflo recommends using 2" plumbing on their hammerhead in order to maximize flow. If you use anything smaller than 2", you are losing flow to the friction created in trying to move water at such a high velocity through undersized piping. By using only 3/4" tubing, it's basically the equivalent of valving the pump back by about 70%.

If you use 2" plumbing, that Hammerhead Gold should be pushing around 4,800GPH at 7' of head pressure, maybe a bit less depending on how much head that canister filter adds. I agree that you should always have 2 pumps, but I think once you get the plumbing corrected, the flow from one hammerhead will be plenty. Keep one as a spare...running two would turn that tank into a blender, not to mention it would be expensive to run (600 watts running 24/7 will definitely add some $$$ to your power bill).

What size are your bulkhead drains?

It's weird that my pump looked nothing like yours:

So your saying that I should run 2" returns as close to the bottom of the tank as I can before going into the four 3/4" bulkheads for the returns will correct my flow problem?
If I run 2" on the discharge side will it hurt at all that the bulkhead an the suction side is 1 1/2".
As far as our pumps looking different I had contacted reeflow and asked them about that they told me that they recently changed brands of motors on their pumps. They also stated that all the flow ratings were still the same.
Thanks

I agree on the LEDs. MH would end up costing a lot and may cause heat issues. I'm thinking of building a tank that size when we move to our house. May I ask how much was the tank?
