thats pretty cool looks to be either marble or soap stone. A way to tell is you can actually chip away soap stone with a knife (much like soap). Try a small bit on the underside with a knife. You cant chip marble hardly at all with just a knife.
i will try that sometime :)

That's quite a carving! If you find out the whole story, please fill us in.

Did your grandpa clean it up somehow? It doesn't seem to be very encrusted. Any idea where he was diving when he found it?

That's a real a mystery you have. Check to see when the Antiques Roadshow is coming to your area! :)
sad thing is my gramps is at that point where his memory is gone
so really, who knows where he got it from
:irked:
i thought the same about how clean it was
not sure if it was just clean, didnt come from the water,or he just cleaned it that good, very possible with my gramps lol
and no clue where he dove, all around fl,down to the keys, and even a bunch of islands, not in us,so who knows
sux lol
:D
and i dont know if i would let those people even touch it

VERY cool!!!!! Look for a signature on the bottom, that'll help a great deal in determining where it's from. I'm guessing Italian? The etchings of the floers on the pots look cool. I'd love to see that in person so I could study it better.
i will have to sit down and study it looking for a sig
you would think with all the engravings there would be one
good idea
:)

does indeed seem to ba marble.. and the designs seem asian of some descent...... any idea where he picked it up?

it reminds of very old asian pottery and kinda similar in style to what my grandpa id for wood cut figures.

Yeah well if it makes you rich you can get a replica made especially for your tank lol
