An associate of ours has trained her cichlid hybrid to swim in circles. With the diet and an exercise regime, that fish is going to have a six pack down there...enter the races. :) . I'm sure all is good then. It is just that some Fhs can be more susceptible to ailments. But You are a comprehensive caring fish Dad.

The original 4-5 pieces would be good for a large adult. That is if we are talking about pieces that are normal pellet size. A little fatter than rice grains. Do you have approximate measurements of your fish? I worked in construction and that was your workbench in the basement, so you could probably guess his approximate size.
A fish's digestion is pretty tiny. Feeding them an amount the size of their eye or slightly more is adequate. Was your Dad thinking that poor scrawny fish needs more feeding to grow? Good intentions. Also a lot of information can be misunderstood. First born fish fry require multiple (tiny amounts) feedings that decline in frequency as they become sub adults. 1-1½-2 pellets at this stage, depending on size would be fine. Feed treats instead of meal rather than addition to meal.

He’s around 1.5inches. Maybe getting close to 2inches. It’s been a week since I saw him and another week before I’ll be back so I’m guessing he’ll grow a little in that time. The pellets are tiny. I misinformed FINWIN FINWIN when I said they are a max of 2mm. My metric system is not the greatest since I work on my 66 f100 and old farm equipment that all has standard. But I know metric will hit me in the face the farther along I get in mechanical engineering. The pellets are less than a mm. They are super small.

Gotcha and with the broken hammered pieces maybe hard to judge if not uniform.

That size cichlid. 1 pellet is fine. It your fish has been foraging through the gravel with the eight pieces then he might have gotten all the food.

#!" posted before I was finished. 1-1½. Pellets for that size fish. Increase with time. Show approx. size pellet on ruler when have time? I am talking about a 2mm pellet. Your call. But if you want normal development rather than forced growth. He should mature 6 months to a year and continue growing. Be big soon enough.

Unless he has been showing gravel foraging behavior and/or gobbling all the food as it is introduced to tank--with 7-8 pellets there might be a water quality problem. Maybe not with that quantity of water, growing beneficial bacteria culture and good filter, water parameters might be alright. It is just one little fish in a big tank. Maybe some Prime added to just to be Safe. Fish are also constantly foraging, including eating microscopic algae as it forms on Tank walls and decore. Cichlids are omnivores. Bug bites is also super nutritious food so slightly less might be indicated.

Have an exciting announcement about my little guy. Was FaceTiming my dad today while he was feeding. As soon as his fingers hit the surface of the water he went right up and tried grabbing it from his fingers. It was so cool to see him hand feed for the first time. I’ll get some more pics soon hopefully. His dorsal fin and lower fin are starting to get pointy and longer and he’s really looking good. Hopefully I can get some good pics of him tomorrow.
