My new baby Frontosa

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe I didn't say it correctly, I only paid $24.00 for the whole lot. Check for a Chiclid Association in your area and see if they have auctions and swaps. It is a great way to get good fish from local breeders at a cheap price.

@ $9! Get a couple more depending on your tank size. Cool score.:D

I wish there were more, i would have gotten them. He was the only one there, but I'm going to keep checking to see if they get more in and if they will be the same price. The owner of the lfs gets fish shipments really frequently for such a small shop, but I think I got this one so cheep because the owner actually wasn't there and the girl who helped me was a dog groomer, not a fish expert...
hehe. Better for me ;)

Oh, and how many could I keep in a 20g long if it was just Fronts? As juvies at least? I'm always willing to upgrade for the sake of my fish, and I would love to have a little breeding colony.

oh yeah, I understood that, sorry I didn't make it more clear... heh heh
The front's at the other lfs's in the area are about $30 for a single 2"er and theres a 5" at another shop for ~$50
That was a great pick up on your part. And thanks for help, I'll keep my eyes open for swaps. Home is actually Seattle, so i would guess I could find something like that in a month or two when I get back home.

They are great for getting good quality fish.

You could keep four for awhile in a 20, but I would not keep them in it long. They need a lot of room for swimming.

Well I have oscars going into a 45 until they outgrow that, then the Fronts could go into that when I get an upgrade for the Oscars... What size tank should 4 fronts ultimately end up in?

Thanks. And not a problem... I have a few larger tanks in the works, along with an indoor pond. :D

Fronts will need a 75 gallon (4 foot) at a minimum for a couple of them (1 male and 2 females), a colony will need a minimum of 6 foot tank. Most people i know keep them in a six foot tank. I did notice that they tend to grow slowly compared to other fish. That should help you out a bit.

Make sure that you pick up a sinking cichlid pellet for him, mine would starve if i only fed floating pellets, not aggressive feeders and end up going hungry otherwise if there are other top feeders in the tank. They also like krill, i rehydrate it and shred it up, they say : yum.

Good luck.

Frontosa grow very slowly ..thats one of the reasons they are expensive..it takes quite awhile to raise them to breeding age and maturity..but they do eventually get big.. and they are a great investment.. but you should grow a group of them {colony} other wise you risk losing them.. they need each other.. or they stress.. if you invest for a few more take good care of them and find you cannot keep them ..i am sure you will get your money plus selling them.. good luck...he is a very sweet baby.

Thank you all. I'm really enjoying having him... how long do you think I have before I would run into problems without a colony?
And what would be a good price normally for these guys since I got him out of pure luck. Do I really need to spend the $30-$50 on the fronts around here, or does anyone know of some way I could get them cheaper around Seattle somewhere?
