Alone may be not be the only way, My wyckii has been commed with aggressive fish all his life, maybe worth a shot if he realised a big cichlid wont just roll over maybe he can have some friends... A giant gourami or dovii might work long term..
It's way early but if anything I'd go with tigrinum - I can base it only on its camouflage pattern.
wednesday13 your turn?
Don't know what the other person saw to assume artc, but off of these pics I say wyckii. Wyckioides don't get white on its fins, they'd be clear when small but by this size it'd be darker and beginning to get a red fin if it doesn't have it yet. An easy way to distinguish the two are the barbels. It's extended from the body a little so I can't tell for sure, but on wyckioides the barbels will reach the anal fin, where as wyckii it reaches towards the middle of the dorsal. I can't tell the exact words, but I know the barbels are a taxonomic trait for ID. The eye placement and shape was slightly different as well I believe. If anything when it's 6 inches post a pic and I can tell you for sure. Wyckioides, if not farm raised, grow incredibly fast ime. And are extremely territorial and fairly active which attributes to why they are worse when compared to wyckii which tend to stick to a hideout more. They also go for all regions of the tank including upper levels whereas wyckii's are said to stick to the bottom. I've never kept wyckii, but I've kept wyckioides and read several people's experiences that were very similar to mine. And I've read everything I can find on the two. You might be better off with him in the 4600 gallon if you had stronger fish, he will kill the koi eventually imo, whether he waits till he's big enough to claim the whole pond or a portion. There will likely be some type of casualty. The 300 is however not good for him if he's a wyckioides, if he's a wyckii you're set. Not many people keep these (wyckioides) long term as they soon learn they can grow to 5ft and are one of the most aggressive fish. Post a picture of the fish now if you still have it, wyckii are my favorite catfish lol.Hoping to maybe get an ID on this guy now. About 4".

Good to hear you found out what it is then lol and that's good, looking forward to updatesOh he's definitely a wyckioides. His tail is starting to get nice and red and his whiskers are nearly as long as him. I'll see if I can get a decent picture but he likes to hide in his pvc tube almost all the time, and if he is out, when I come by, he runs right back in to it.
Good news is I just started the process of rearranging fish, so everyone will be getting upgrades soon.
