sweet .. i didnt know what was best. i have a Rena xp3 on my 150 right now.. and i used what came with it.. but didnt know what i wanted to replace it with.. but now i know

I would also look into some sort of polishing pad...I dont have a fx5 nor do I know exactly what they make to fill them with but I run 2 xp3's on my 240 strictly as mech filtration and I have the corse sponge on the bottom finer sponges in the middle and the top tray filled with a "polishing" pad. The foam around the outside of the fx5 will work good to get the bigger stuff but if these 2 fx5's were my sole filtration I would stick some sort of polishing pad in there too.

So if it will work (no idea) some bio stuff in the 2 chambers and the last one filled with carbon and a polishing pad....

polishing pads and prefilter media are crap go all bio max. the fx 5 has enough mechanical filtration... its on giant sponge for Christ sake..
i have first hand experience.

9 boxes bio max done....

True it is a giant sponge...but is it a giant course sponge or a finer one? It can be as big as a house but if the pours are big too it wont trap the finer stuff.

9 boxes of biomax claim to be good for how many gallons? Is 9 total for one or two fx 5's? You might not need all that and can use the space of other filtration methods if the fx5s are the only filters.

im not trying to be a jerk or anything but i have first hand experience with the fx5 and i know that mechanical filtration is covered!! and all that the polishing pads do is slightly polish ur water for a week then get clogged, reduce ur flow and have to be thrown away and bought again!

9 boxes of bio max is for 1 fx5

3 boxes per basket each basket holds 1500 grams of media. each box is 500 grams.

whats the volume of one box of biomax?

Not trying to act like I have one...but I am acting like I have had a filter before and know the general concept of corce sponges vs polishing pads.

And what are you saying yourself...a polishing pad polishes the water only for a few days and then gets clogged....what do you think is clogging it...perhaps the smaller stuff the sponges didnt get?

Not trying to be an ass...he wanted opinions on what to put...mine is to use the filter to trap the smallest amount of trash it can and have it properly filter the water biologically and chemically because these are the only filters on the tank. And me...I want the water as clear as it can be.

I was wondering how many gallons are said to be good for the amount of bio material you are suggesting. Because you can have a 55gallon garbage can full of all the bio material you want...but the bio load on the tank might not be enough to have bacteria live on ALL that surface area...thus wasting space you could be using for other forms of filtration.

Just my .02 :D

u should buy a fx 5 and test them for yourself rather then just assuming its like all other canister filter polishing pads...

eheim makes a great fine particle trapping media that doesn't clog, i use that in my eheim 2028 pro.

my point is:
lol... never in a million years would i use fx5 polishing pads again.. waste of money and time.. my tank is Crystal clear with or without them..period..

im not gonna argue about this anymore...

the end..

thank u
