u should buy a fx 5 a test them for yourself rather then just assuming its like all other canister filter polishing pads...

my point is:
lol... never in a million years would i use fx5 polishing pads again.. waste of money and time.. my tank is Crystal clear with or without them..period..

the end..

No matter how clear you think your tank is there is still something in there you cant see that is clogging your polishing pads...you said it yourself...and if its not clogging the pads...its clogging your pores on your bio max reducing the area for the bacteria. Why do you think people use Micron filtration socks that get clogged after a few days...what a PITA but it sure does trap the small stuff u dont see but you fish have to live in. Maybe thats why your tank is so clear...the bio max is trapping the smaller stuff and since you have so much if it it still has enough room for bacteria too...for now.

A polishing pad is a polishing pad is a polishing pad. If its labled a polishing pad and it clogs faster than the next one it polishes better...nothing to assume there. Just like a 100 micron filter sock will clog faster than a 200 micron.

I guess its hard to tell through typing but im not arguing...im discussing. :D

and if you have a filter media that traps small stuff but never clogs its not trapping much IMO. Its the stuff it filters out that clogs it....

.I dont have a fx5 nor do I know exactly what they make to fill them with

FX5 polishing pads a crap... Eheim makes a good small particle capturing media..

I would also look into some sort of polishing pad...

Ok...your eheim "small particle" filter stuff that traps all the small stuff but never clogs it the best stuff....regardless....its what I said in the first place. Some sort of...polishing...small particle...micron...uber tiny stuff filtering...pad...floss...material. Whatever can be used in the fx5 other than the first stage of sponges...thats why I said I dont know what they make for use in the fx5 but I know they have some sort of filter media that will get the smallest stuff possible aka a polishing pad or whatever you want to call it or use in it. The thing is if it never clogs or slows the flow its not trapping the smaller stuff IMO.....

And to the OP as far as what in what baskets...just go from course to fine (weather its via sponges, pads, floss, or bags of chem media) before you have the bio...bio last so it doesn't get...clogged with whatever passed your pre filtration efforts.

eheim makes a good small particle filtration pad, i have 100% perfect crystal clear water and the pad doesn't get clogged as easy as the crappy FX 5 polishing pads. im sure if i left the pad in there for longer then it was designed for it would clog... but i do filter maintenance once every month and change my fine particle filtration, if i didn't then it would clog and i would get reduced flow like those crappy FX5 polishing pads give u in about a weeks time.

my water looks and has the same parameters with or without the FX5 polishing pads. i use eheims pads because they don't clog as fast but still give me the same results as the FX5 polishing pads if not better!

filer pads go in the top and/or middle baskets.

layout of mine is:

bottom and middle baskets fluval bio max/eheim substrate pro and top basket crushed coral.
