the tail and fins have a few large blotches but not small dots. it almost looks like the fish is starting to loose his pattern torwards the back of his body

Hope all these pics can help someone nail and ID

As already stated it's a florida, not a hybrid. Snout will differ with age in floridas. Older gars have thicker snouts. Pattern is also quite variable in floridas.

The trident you are seeing could be where the bones of the head join together. All gars have this to one degree or another. Does not mean it's a hybrid.

well, I wasn't sure if it is a FLG or not because of the thick snout, but seem like the angle that you took the picture make the snout look thick. Now I'm sure it is a Florida gar!

thanks guys its good to to know which gar I have!

My pleco is 17" the gar looks to be about the same, if not slightly longer.

So far he won't eat for me. prawn, silversides and various pellets have been ignored. I dropped some prawn in last night including one large piece that my nocturnal fish (bichirs and CK) couldn't swallow, and the gar isn't looking skinny so I assume he mustve got a piece of the prawn last night.

Tomorrow I am planning on getting some feeders for him. what would be a good choice? I'm thinking medium comets

Okay the florida gar refused to take dead food for a week so I got him some feeders, hes very fat now and seems to be doing great. I guess I'll just have to get him 10 feeders every 2 weeks and let him stuff himself on 2 feedings of several fish.

Or you can just put in the effort to get it on non live foods. 1 week isn't a long time for a gar that size. Just continue to offer other food items and it'll switch as it sees the other fish eating.
