my new geophagus red head tapajos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the kind words Dave.

Eric... I would never consider keeping a green terror or baysnook with any 'true' Geophagus (not that it is not possible, just not something I would try). IMO they do best in species tanks or with similar fishes. If you're interested in biotope correct tankmates like Dave mentioned: Laetacara cuviceps, Biotodoma cupido, Heros cf. efasciatus, Satanoperca jurupari, and Geophagus sp. "tapajos" would all be fine tankmates that are found in the Rio Tapajos. Generally, any species in those genera would be okay, tank size permiting of course. If you're into more predatory fishes, the dwarf pikes would be okay, Crenicichla regani is also found in the Rio Tapajos. The only tetra I know from the Rio Tapajos is Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis (Lemon Tetra). Hope that helps,

Ed

I have not kept those species but think heckelii would be fine, brasiliensis would probably depend on the demeanor of the individual. I personally would not try brasiliensis.

Duh, I totally forgot about laetacara. I haven't had the best luck with them (then again, I got them at Petsmart. Mainly though I think they're getting bullied by some other fish) but many others have.

Here are my babies. They graduated into the 20L growout yesterday. I feed them whenever I get up during the day, so anywhere from 5-10 times daily, and give daily or almost daily water changes. They've roughly doubled in size since I got them in October.

No brasilensis with orange or red heads! They are too agressive. I keep mine in a species tank and these are very peaceful even with co-specif. They are very owner responsive when they are adults. Nice looking batch by the way.

Wow Dave, those are some lookers!!!!

Ed, Dave, if you guys wanna do a little male or female swapping let me know.

My trio is from one source and my sub adults are from another. I wouldn't mind throwing one more source into the mix to try to get better coloration/size.

Where do you live? (TN, I'm guessing?) I could meet you halfway in Indy if you ever go that way. I have an adult female who used to attempt to breed all the time but who has been getting bullied by the dominant male (not her mate), and I just have to keep her in a QT. Wouldn't mind swapping her for a more headstrong female (and I'd pay a bit too). And I'd certainly love to mix things up with this batch too once I'm able to sex them.

Yeah, I'm in TN. If I'm ever up that way I will definitely let you know. No need in the extra money, we'll just swap for what we both want/need;):) I am just glad to see more Eartheater enthusiasts on MFK.

I have a tank full of sub-adults. Hoping over the next couple of months that a pair will form and then I can get rid of a few to lighten the tank load.

i think tese are the most beautiful fishes ever :WHOA:
