Do you see the big difference in the head shape?

Yes the difference is very clear, my question/comment was directed at titansfever83, sorry for any confusion.

westle... have you had the fish with the hump since a fry? To me he looks much, much older than 18 months. Goodluck with the fry eggs.

Your dominant male has a hump? (P.S. you have beautiful fish!)

Maybe my males have a very small bump, but nothing like that.

Unfortunately, I do not think there is an image of a Holotype to refer to.

Yeah, it doesn't show up well in my pics. Although mine is not as prominent as Westle's...... His almost looks like a steindachneri hump!!!;)

My growout tank has several 2.5-3.5" Orangeheads and I noticed one of the smaller males of the group is already developing his nuchal hump. Kinda cute on a little 3" Orangehead. With a 4'x2' footprint, that little male owns about 2 sq ft. of the tank, LOL. He is the most aggressive Orangehead I have ever seen and at 3"!!!!!

That guy with the massive hump looks like some kind of hybrid. Like a different fish masquerading as an orangehead. He's really cool. What kind of temperament does he have?

I am so jealous of you guys' orangeheads colors. Mine, as Ed has seen on another site, are much duller in color. My juvies, which I have been powerfeeding, are closing in on 3" and have great color, it's just the adults having issues with the coloration. It's driving me crazy.

Anyway, they're a great new addition, Scubarod. And at a steal of a price. They're great fish to keep. If I were you though I wouldn't keep them with datnoids, but with other south american fish. Maybe other eartheaters or just some tetras. I'd also switch to a lighter substrate and rounder rocks like Ed's tank, but that's just me. These guys are interesting and colorful enough to be the focus of the tank so there's no need to go too overboard on tankmates. I keep dats too, but they're the focus of another tank, not the one with the geos.

How, looks like your the man to ask about tankmates. What about green terror and baysnook. What geophagine would you reccomend?

I'd say Ed's the man, really. He has had more experience and more success with these and other eartheaters.

Absolutely not on the green terror. I don't know anything about baysnooks. I have mine with a bunch of tetras, some jurupari, and some leftovers that can't go in my monster tank (rainbows, an ancient molly, and two giant danios). If I was starting from scratch though I'd research what other fish were in that region and limit it to the peaceful species nearby.
