yes we do know lol

Vamp I know what I'm about to say is just gonna piss you off even more buuuuut, I just looked at him and he is getting white edging on his tail. And the yellow is getting alot more colorful and he has a pitch black edging with the white on the tips. Does that not sound like Armatus?

Don't challenge the king of payara.

What size is it now PayaraMan? If its 4-5" and doesn't have a point going out of the center of the caudal fin it isn't an H. armatus. If it does it is.

He was a bit beat up when I bought him because he was with two others so I know there was some nipping, But it does look like he has a pointed center on his caudal tail and he is 6". I'll post some pics in a bit.

its fairly hard to explain the differences but i can tell by the jaw size and tail size right off the bat. this is a very common tat varient with the yellow tail. its not like we havent seen this varient b4

What's funny?

This is a post from the Armatus id guide.

Armatus:
Red/orange adipose fin
black slash behind gill plate
white edged caudal fin
clear caudal fin base turning to black
extensions in center of tail fin (larger individuals)
swims at a level swimming angle
larger jaw
down turned head

Scomb:
Black adipose fin
black blotch behind gill plate
black caudal fin base turning to clear
no extensions in caudal fin
smaller jaw
upturned head
swims at a slightly head down angle (most of the time)
more pronounced hump behind head

These are some of the things i have noticed between my payaras. Also the two behave differently. Also, in larger fish 6in and up, the arm tends to have a goldish colored head while a scomb is a more darker silver color. Anyone else notice more things different between the two?
p.s. Great Idea rumblesushi!

And here are some pictures of the tails of the two species including one of vamptrev's. This is how I knew the ones at my lfs are armatus over tatauaia.
