My new Midas

Nice looking midas! I would guess to say it is a male based on the length and shape of his dorsal fin. Most experiences I have had indicated to males having a much longer and pointed dorsal fin.

I would agree with gruff master though. I wouldn't put dempseys in the same league as midas. Each fish will be a little different so one never knows for sure. This hobby is definitely a chemistry project with each tank. But over all, I still wouldn't put dempseys in the same league as Midas either. It sounds like a cool stock of fish. Hope they work for ya!
 
Thanks everyone. Don't worry I know a Midas is in a different league to a Dempsey - but what I meant was I can't see a large adult male being killed by one. Maybe injured or torn up but not killed. Am I wrong again ? I am new to Midas so educate me !
 
Dempsey is one of the most overrated fish..... same with people who think their oscars are tough cuz they bully firemouths...lmao
dude... my texas raped the dempsey then i put the midas that was larger male midas and the texas murdered him the dempsey didn't even look like a dempsey the next morning...lol seriously... and they grew up together(just an example i know you don't have a texas).. the texas was smaller just like your midas... if you get a big enough tank the dempsey can run away and your good... a 100 gallon is not big enough the midas is on another level of ferociousness and it's a territory thing so your dempsey will die
 
^^ yep, i agree. Midas/RD are extremely aggressive. Nothing compare to a JD.

There's really no other way to explain it. An adult male JD can most certainly be killed or badly injured by a Midas. I'm not saying that this will happen in your case. In this hobby some pretty strange things happen and completely crush the odds. But in most cases an adult Midas will maul a JD. JD will fight other cichlids back. They are not pushovers. But they are not really known for being exactly tough guys either. The aggressiveness of a Midas can really be seen if it is confined to a small space with another big cichlid. It will want the tank for itself and will do what it takes to make that happen. Don't get me wrong. I want your stock to work. I just don't want you to be surprised to see your JD hurt by the Midas. At a little over 5" my Midevil flares up at the dog when it sees it through the tank.

One thing I want to point out is before this current stock I have only kept a Geophagus Red Hump Eartheater and a male JD (Another one) and my current Female JD.

So I don't want you to think I am an inexperienced keeper messing around, I understand the basis of caring for Cichlids but lack knowledge of the types of aggression associated with specific species. Obviously the name Red Devil gives it away but with some Cichlids common names can be over exaggerated maybe?

I am am wanting to learn what can be expected long term as you enter the adult territory of Cichlid keeping - basically when they become more dangerous to each other.

Gasha I do have a Texas.....a Carpintis and he is a big bully your right. Incredibly hyper-active Cichlid. For now at 5.5 inch he is put in his place by the larger male JD - my female JD on the other hand backs down and will get away from him asap when he swims near her. She is frightened of him. The Oscar too has him in his place and won't stand for any messing either.

This is how I would rank the heirarchy of power:

Male JD
Oscar
Texas
Female JD
Jaguar
Midas

But so far there is no chasing apart from the odd squabble now and then which has given me an idea of who ranks where in the heirarchy.

I will take all your advice on board everyone so thanks for your input. Yeah Dempseys do look like they can handle themselves but I can see what you mean.

I can't believe it flairs up at your dog Gruff master lol. Does it attack your hand too when your doing maintenence? The only time I experienced that was at my lfs when I was buying a few bits and pieces and there in a tank next to the shelves was a male Jag trying to get to me protecting his fry. Crazy.
