My new monster clown loaches...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Clowns are starting to grow on me . How hard are they to take care of?

I guess this question depends on your level of fish keeping and dedication. They prefer a sandy substrate so it doesn't hurt their barbels (whisker things). Ideally you have a 6' tank, or a 4' tank for smaller ones with the intent of upgrading eventually. They're really active, need to be kept in groups, eat almost anything, require a lot of hiding places (you'll actually see them more often if you do this). They prefer a low pH environment with softer water, but they do fine with any parameter so long as it's stable. They're REALLY prone to ich, so you should keep your temperature high as possible. They thrive in 85-88F if your other tank mates allow it. They like highly oxygenated, pristine water with a TON of water movement. They prefer subdued lighting as well. They're compatible with nearly everything as well. I think that about covers it.

Nice! I like How You have a bunch of different sizes, how many CLs do You Have in that tank? And do You ever have amy problems amongst the shoal?

13 now. The 5 new largest ones, 3 medium sized ones, and 5 little guys around 1.5-2". No issues at all. They squabble frequently, but that's normal.

I'm not doubting size but it does look like a 9" thick clown loach to me. Perception is deceiving sometimes. For me, before I introduce a clown loach or fish to tank. I measure cuz it is very easy to do and quick (low stress). This way I can track growth progress. If I'm wrong than this is a very proportional 10" CL I have ever seen. So, go measure it when you have the chance to.

I just put out a tape measurer along the length of my tank and waited a few minutes for the loach to pull up alongside it. At a very slight angle 2" from the glass he measured about 10.25". I'll try to get some proof for ya tomorrow.

Doesn't sound bad. Sounds Easier than my redtails! Lol. I was thinking of setting up a tank for them but IV heard they grow slow. I

Very, very slow. From babies until about 5" it's pretty quick (about a year). From there on it is pretty slow. Usually takes something like 10 years to get a 10"er on average I have heard.

That's crazy. My redtail grew 5 inches in a month LOL. Is it good to keep them in shoals? What do they like to eat?

They like eating a wide range of foods, from frozen bloodworms to fresh shrimp to zuchini. Most people feed NLS pellets as a staple and supplement with other foods. Mine are fed about there times a day, something different at each feeding. The below site is very helpful and--careful--they are addicting!

Nice score on the loaches, Spencer. Riverfront Aquariums used to have some 14" specimens, largest CL's that I have ever seen in person.

Thanks Neil! I heard about those big ones at Riverfront. I never saw them with my own eyes though. I've been trying to get pictures of the big one alongside the ruler today without much success. Eventually I will succeed :)

I thought I'd upload the best pictures I've gotten so far of the large one. It's almost always hiding behind the wood in the back of the tank, which make pictures very difficult. It hasn't pulled up beside the ruler properly during my sessions with the camera. I lose my patience and come back and try again later. I'll keep trying until I get it though lol

This is what I usually end up seeing. A swarm of loaches covering the large one lol
