Parachromis are a group of large and agressive cichlids from Central America known as guapotes. Some of the largest of the species are also more recognizable in the hobby under the names Parachromis dovii and Parachromis managuensis. All are considered very agressive preditory type of fish and specialized care is required especially at breeding and feeding times. Parachromis motaguense is a very beautiful fish and is arguably the most attractive guapote which is somewhat surprising given that they are not very popular or well known in the hobby. These animals are equipped with a set of teeth called pseudocanines and they are used frequently by the male when guarding his territory and fry. Cleaning the tank during breeding time can be a dangerous if you are not careful. Motaguense are known to fling themselves at exposed hands or against the glass with alarming speed, occasionally even breaking off their pseudocanine teeth which then grow back a few weeks later.
