Got to have a pleco in every tank. :grinyes: I have been "upgrading" my commons for some more "fun" plecos. Green Phantom huh? Once it gets used to the tank, will it lighten up like in the bag photos? updated pics soon please.

In south-eastern Michigan it seems like there are commons plecos $3-5 and then plecos $50 and up. Nothing cool in between. :irked:

Most of the time plecos exhibit a lighter pattern when they are stressed, i.e. in the bag. These "green phantoms", can individually differ greatly with colours and spots. Very dark greens almost appearing a black, all the way through lighter greens and yellows and mustards. The spots can be very large and mainly on the head, or can be small and go further down the fish's body. Some can have only a couple of spots if any at all.

easy to tell the difference liz, dorsal and adipose fins are connected by extended dorsal membrame. However i admit, sometimes if the fish has a damaged dorsal... makes it harder. B demantoides is the high fin, H. subviridis is the low fin. A good example of this can be seen here http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=6955 where the non-hi-fin (H. subviridis) the adipose and dorsal are obviously not connected in any way. Haven't heard about males having a higher hi-fin personally.

so what do you think mine is or do you need better pics to judge?

I just got one of those little guys. Lfs labeled it as a green spotted pleco. I also googled it and found that they come from peru and only reach about 6". I paid $25 for mine in manhattan.
