My new pickup - GATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At 12-13", Max ignores feeder fish pretty well. I had thought that he was playing nice until he recently ate my 6" FATF and killed a tarpon and tinfoil barb. I'm pretty bummed out about all that.

Once I get my 510 up and running, I was actually planning on trying some smaller Africans in it as dithers, knowing full well that either Max, Dottie or Drogo is quite likely to pick them off over time. I was tempted to go with a proper African biotope, but I love my aro and goonch too much to do that. Oh well.

Dude, you should have known better then to put a 12" GATF with a 6" fish that's long and slender. :grinno:

Hey, a year of successful cohabs might have made me a bit over comfortable. If he wanted to kill fish though, why the expensive ones? LOL

Because he wants you to know he's the boss. lol

LOL I believe that! He told me to keep those upstarts out of his Koolaid. He got my attention!

In all seriousness though, I'm quite sure that it happened becaue I pulled the aragonite substrate from my tank which messed with the water chemistry. I had teh aragonite in as buffer when I was running blackwater. I'm going to be moving soon and figured it would be less traumatic if I started moving the fish toward neutral water now rather than having them acclimate during the 1200 mile trip I'm about to take. Everyone acted really weird during the change and Max's answer was to kill 1/3rd of his tankmates.

Couple of (semi-blurry) pics to show the coloration coming in on his caudal and dorsal fins. Much more bronze color, even on the dorsal now (it actually has a reddish bronze tinge, but it's faint):

His tail hooks are finally coming in. I guess the tail just needed to fully heal before they started to grow in. Bit more red on the lower lobe now, but still not what I would consider to be strong red coloration yet:

He's eating around 6 food sticks twice a day now, and I've been mixing the vitachem-soaked shrimp back in once every 3 days just for variety. I figure if I only give it to him every so often, it won't stop him from eating pellets. It hasn't messed with his normal feeding at all so far, so it looks good from here.

Looking good! He's gonna be a beast in no time. My GATF has started eating food sticks also the past week. Hopefully that will jump start his growth.

Quick video of him eating some food sticks. He's eating probably twice as many this week as he has been (between 8 and 10 sticks at a time), he also just just got a new set of teeth in about 4 days ago. Second time he's shed all his teeth since I got him. Sorry about the lighting in the video, it doesn't look like this at all in person - I guess my camera phone just doesn't handle lighting very well.
