My new puffer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes hopefully should be good be nice to have a big home all to her self, she should be ok until it's set up for her I'm guessing she should be good for 6 inch in her current home so should have a few months to get everything sorted

You should be able to getaway with 6 months, as long as you keep the tanks water clean, should be no problem...

Ok great thanks for the help, I do 20 - 30 litre change every 3 days on that tank at the moment and seems to keep it really nice, also will the fahaks be ok with my dragon puffer (tetradon Palembangensis) until she's in her new home, I mean there together at the moment and everything's fine but I know how puffers can be

Hahahah, another puffer that i used to own...

The palembang is going to be a real gamble just like your fahaka eventually will be depending on his current size...

Palembangs by nature are piscivores, and therefore if opportunity arises, and hes big enough to, MAY take a bite of your fahaka...

But at the same time with them (palembangs) being quite sedentary, if you have a complex enough setup they might be okay for a little while, but i would strongly advise you to keep a close eye on both fish incase either one turns vicious...

I myself used to keep a few dithers with my palembangs, but as long as he was well fed, he stayed in his cave 99.9% of the time, and never bothered the other fish unless they swam right in front of his mouth... At which point he would slowly move forward to try and target the fish, but never really lunged at them unless they stayed there for too long...

The female i had was slightly more active, but again, unless the fish was hanging out in front of her, she didnt really lunge at the dithers unless she hadnt been fed a few days...

Yes I know exactly what you mean I have found my Palembang to be fine with some but some others he/she don't like and bang there gone, so I'm keeping a very close eye on the pair and they are complete fine the Palembang is 4-5 inch and fahaka 1.5 -2 inch there's lots of hiding space as the Palembang likes to hide as you know, lots of bogwood and plants caves and that hopefully will be fine till the fahakas in her new home, would hate anything to happen as my Palembang is great and got his own personality and now becoming attached to the little fahaka she's very active and come straight up to see me

Seen as both are quite small, i'd be most worried about the fahaka as she'll grow pretty fast compared to your palembang...

Although like you i got my fahaka at 1.5" and if i remember correctly it was till she was around 9-10" when she would start taking more notice of tankmates roaming her areas and get a little vicious towards them... But this will depend on your puffers personality how they will act...

About dithers, for your palembang you could try faster moving mid-top dwellers, or fast fish as such rosy reds may work... But naturally some may get eaten...

For my fahaka, at the moment the only tank mates she has is a pleco and 1 solo yellow lab chiclid... There was 2 but one got taken out and the remaining one has lived happily with my fahaka now for i think going on the 4th year...

I've tried other dithers such as rosy reds etc, but over time they would all disappear, so i've since stopped trying to add more tankmates since it seemed rather pointless...

Last but not least, fahakas also have been known to turn on tankmates at random, even after years of success being housed with the same fish, so i think that would be why most say its best for puffers to fly solo in the tank, unless you dont mind losing said fish...

Ok thanks a lot for the help, going to just leave the to puffers together for the time being until her tanks set up and then maybe just keep a vampire plec in with her to help clean her mess up and then I may try some dithers with the Palembang but May just leave him alone as he likes it that way, how big do palembangs grow? I have read they top out at 5-6 inch max but would like to hear from someone that has kept one, thanks again ben

^ okay, this has been one question on my mind for a while now coz when i sold my pair to a store for them to keep and breed, the male was probably around 5" and the female around 6"...

But there was one time not long after i sold my pair that another lfs i was at had pair that were no joke at least 10-12"+ in length which freaked me out... Unfortunately i couldnt get a pic coz the store owner wasnt having it that day... And when I tried the week after to go back and see if i could get a pic, both were sold...

So in all honesty, i cant say for sure, although my old female at 6" has been the next biggest size i've seen in person next to those two monsters...

-edit-

Regarding tankmates, its probably best to start them off with your fahaka young so that they more or less grow up together, which i personally believe makes a huge difference towards initial aggression...

Ok great I'll try and do that, god dam that's a big Palembang never herd anything like that only seen them at the 5-6 inch mark, would of been great to of got that pic, sounds like they were on steroids or growth haha, maybe they were some kind of cross breed or something, how was it having a pair of palembangs? Did they ever breed?
