My New Red Belly Pacu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
People are going to flame me for saying this but whatever.... I bought two pacus the size of nickels a little over a year ago and put them in a 55g not knowing much about them. I fell inlove with them despite reading everything about them. A year later these guys are probably a foot longish and growing fast. I have a 155 to put then in bit they're is No way I could house them for life and it sucks. But i feed mine everything but veggie wise they love zucchini tomatoes and peas and they also love any type of nut. They enjoy smashing them with there teeth:3

But in reality I would have to guess that 70% of Pacus purchased in the pet trade are kept in tanks smaller than a 220 for life.

I'd probably say more then that. It's just they look adorable when they're small and they have great personalities nd look like piranhas so people want them so they are a goo money maker in reality they are awesome fish but just get wayyyyyy to big

I didn't mean your setup wasn't big enough sorry if it sounded like that. I meant literally what I said. Pacus are notorious for flipping out when a light comes on too quick, or a kid runs by the tank, and it's been my experience that they will slow themselves down before crashing into the glass if you put driftwood and decos against either side of the tank. Wouldn't matter if it was a 5k gallon tank that pacu will still wig out at some point.

Love the pics of your pacu. I also bought mine because I was told they only got about as big as a adult oscor, when I got them home I did my research and instantly was attached they are awesome fish and I am so glad that I got them. I bought 4 when I got mine they were the size of a silver dollar coin not 3in long and in 2 months they are already pushing 8in. I am fixing to move mine into a 210 gallon until I can set up the means for a bigger set up. Good luck with yours and he looks beautiful.

best too you..love pacus ,,,

Hey, all you naysayers....you DO remember this is MONSTER FISH KEEPERS right? People keep fish on this sight that make Pacu look like guppies. The fish was bought, OP sounds responsible and informed....overstating the obvious is just counter productive.
I kept a Pacu for about three days...in that time it virtually destroyed the fins on my Oscar....Pacu, 3"....Oscar, 13"....yeah, fiesty little fish. Point is, these fish are long term spunky creatures that need a lot of space and good clean water....if thats the intention, Pacu are way cool and most certainly monsters in their own right.
