My Oscar, Severum, & Jack Dempsey

Sorry for the poor quality I have a cheap camera.

The oscar I bought about 3 months ago. I bought him from a LFS just labeled as "assorted oscar" at about an inch. Never saw an oscar that was black and white. I wonder what he will look like when he gets bigger. The shop guy told me they were wild caught and he will stay that color. But with some research I'm pretty sure hell look completely differnt as an adult. He is probably about 2 inches now. I have him in a 10 gallon QT tank until he puts on another inch or so, then I will put him into my 125g

My jack dempsey I bought at about 2 inches. He?? I'm guessing is about 5 inches now and has great colors. He is also quite docile with other fish. All he cares about it me feeding him. He used to get the crap kicked out of him by a little firemouth that I gave away.

My severum is probably about 7 inches. Purchased him pretty large about two months ago.

I'm sure some will say female on the Jack....I am pretty sure it is a male.

Why would you think male? I am 90% sure its female.

I personally have no clue, just thought if it was female it would have more of the blue beard instead of a few speckles on the lower portion of gil plate.

She is really blue which is normally a rather clear sign of a female.

He. Females will have "bean shaped spots" and "blotches" below the lateral line. Although this male has what appears to be two beans, the symmetrical spots above the lateral line, on the gill plate tell the whole story, and the lack of blotches below the lateral line on the gill plate. The overall body color means nothing. The O.P. has a male Jack, with GREAT color.

I had an Oscar that stayed black and white until it was around five inches. Then it sprouted bright orange spots all over and eventually looked like a standard red tiger, but with larger black velvety areas. Best of luck!

I still go with female, post a pic so i can prove to spizz i am right, i have seen tons of males and females JD's and i really have a strong hunch that it is female, just looks that way. I agree with peathenster that we need a vent shot.
