Basically you seperate part of the aquarium to make it into your sump. Of course the most obvious disadvantage is that you have less tank space and can't hide any of your equipment (sort of). But it wont overflow (can use any size pump), less likely to leak and the flowrate of the pump would be higher (don't have to go against gravity that much)
