My own attempt at the DIY 3d Background

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok so finally an update!

After shopping around for materials, I decided to use the drylok approach due to availability and cost. I started mixing up some colors and slopped on a few coats... I've still got some more work to do, in terms of shading and accentuating the rock-like features but I figured I could give you all a taste..

Also in the pic is the 30 gallon de-rimmed (apprehensive now) and the led lighting I plan to use.. just waiting on a choice of substrate and the last touches to the background then this bad boy should be ready to go

ok I've been absolutely bogged down with school, but the semester is just about over and I'm ready to finish up this background and get the tank set up

I'm worried about if my styrofoam is totally sealed by the drylok.. what are the risks of Styrofoam leaching chemicals into the tank? do i have anything to be worried about or should i just go for it and silicone it in place? it seems like every time I do a new coat over it, I can still see tiny openings in the sealant where styrofoam is visible, and I've done so many coats.. the styrofoam literally feels like a rock.

come on!

someone's gotta know what to say here, I'm a little apprehensive to move on to the next step, and I need to know if there are any risks associated with an incomplete seal on the styrofoam

I haven't made a background yet so I don't feel qualified to answer you. Someone will though. But, I did want to comment...your BG is looking fantastic! Nice job!

Ok so I got back to this project with some of my free time during the hollidays, and I managed to slap a few extra coats of Drylok on there to put my nervousness to rest. I siliconed it into the tank this past weekend and its been drying ever since. These evening I gave it a fill-test while I had my python out to clean my other tanks. Heres the results, I've left it full cause I'm still a little iffy on whether or not to try and reinforce the top of the tank some more, after I removed its stock rim, and I want to make sure it'll hold up to the pressure..
