My pbass - cichla ocellaris

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks for the info. I hope it doesn't develop a bump on it's head :)

It was imported by a manager from MH aquatics, who said they were wild caught from SA but that's all the info he gave. He was sure they were ocellaris.

That's why I've been sure it's ocellaris, also when mine was a bit smaller it did look like photos of ocellaris online - like this for example

btw - what's the most common species of pbass?

Nice PBass. Good luck with him.
I Believe ocellaris are more common.
Not Completly sure though

They are notoriously difficult to tell apart when juvi's so the only sure fire way is to wait til it passes the 8" mark. Should all become clear then. Online resources are not always the best for info sadly. i.e. the pic you have shown could've been someone else who thought they were occeli but may later have turned out not to be. If you can find somewhere that has pics of a PBass that has been grown on from fry to adulthood then that of course helps. Not many of those about though unfortunately. I have two small PBass that I am growing on at the moment, ona at 5"-6" and the other at about 2". Both were meant to be occelis, but I'm pretty sure the bigger one is mono already.

Thankyou trust, I bet soon enough you'll find your lucky cichla. Don't be sore :)

And trust - even though it's a juvenile do you agree with the others that it's a mono rather than ocellaris?

The photo from the internet is a Monoculus aswell.
You would be very lucky if your bass grew a nuchual hump, they only do that when they are breeding. Wild ones that I have seen look very attractive with the hump, i thought so anyway.....

BTW Maidenhead aquatics are like the Macdonalds of the fish world. I have been into one before where they had never heard of siamese tigerfish.

I know that, most of them are thick as ****, including the managers. However - this manager is from Venzuela and gets fish direct, and he seems to know what he is talking about.

Obvioulsy not all MH aquatics are the same. The two I frequent have knowledgable people working there when i have dealt with them. The only thing I have found is that their sales practices seem to differ store to store. One specialising in oddballs and tank busters, the other refusing to sell any tank busters. Very frustrating when oddballs and tank busters are your game :(
