My pet Sturgeon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, we will have to manipulate their water temp to get the gonadal development to the right stage. then we will inject them with a synthetic hormone and within 24 to 48 hours harvest the eggs and milt and put them in an incubator. All the breeding and raising will be artificial. I will try to harvest the eggs by milking but might possibly have to remove them through MIST(minimally invasive surgical technique)

mmmmmmmmm caviar ;)

Cool man, you live like 20 minutes from me. I've been pushing for a sturgeon and Salmonid tank at work; if/when you breed them keep me in mind, I think the Portland Aquarium would be interested.

Awesome! i had no idea there was a new aquarium in Portland! I will have to check it out. What size is their largest freshwater tank? I know there were 4 male sturgeon left around 4.5 to 6 feet left that got sold to an aquarium in Arizona. I think the aquarium down there spent about 3k-4k per fish (and that was the cheap males, females are more). They are not easy to find at that size. mine are a little bigger cause i got to pick my fish first. Send me a text 971 218 5770. I'd like to know more about the aquarium. James

No freshwater yet, working on an expansion. So it's just in the drawing stage. My background is in freshwater so I'd love a big Oregon freshwater tank.

Impressive, talk about having a big enough tank!....I hope all goes well with breeding as well as getting your own property for them.

So i moved my last six fish! Woke up at 4 in the morning, driving by 4:45am, got to Dayville at 10:00am and had the fish loaded at 11:00am. Got all the information on all the sturgeon. They are RFID tagged and were sampled for egg quality and size in 2007 and 2009. from what i'm seeing there should be no problem breeding them this spring. I will have more pics of all the fish soon as i am trying to set up a time to sample them for this year. I got 3 males this trip between 6 feet and 6.5 feet each, 3 females all around 5 to 6 feet. I had already moved all the bigger fish and i was able to fit 2 sturgeon in each bay of the move box instead of just one like the 7.5 to 8 footers :)

Oh, that was the first half of the day LOL.... left by noon, got back to the sturgeons new home and had them in the pond by 6pm, got the trailer unloaded and cleaned out by 7pm, back to drop off the trailer by 8, back home by 8:30... soaked in the tub til 10 and was in bed by 11.... then i slept in til 2pm the next day :D I am also setting up to purchase a 78 acre property near spirit mountain casino in grande ronde and will hopefully be setting up a hatchery within the next couple months!

Dang that was a long trip/day! Awesome dedication! Cant wait to see more pics and hear more about your progress w/ the future hatchery. Thanks for sharing.
