my pleco wont eat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had the same problem a year ago. He's alive and thriving. You just have to find what works. I've had many plecos. They won't eat just about anything, and will actually starve themselves to death.

You NEED a cave or log for plecos. They need to escape from the busy of the tank.

try feeding frozed bloodworms, cukes, frozed shrimp/krill in addition to driftwood, sinking wafers, and weekend feeder cubes

here's a link of my desperation

ill be sure to get him a cave or log or something...mine is doing wat urs did and hes just hanging out on the glass all the time and i have no algae at all yet.i just put a piece of lettuce, blanched pea pod and algae wafer in and turned the light off.hopefully he will munch overnight.also, my rosy reds are nipping at him..wat should i do with the bastards?

there's really nothing you can do other than get him something to take cover in. In the past with other plecos, I would directly put food in their log/cave for them to eat in peace from aggressive fish.

My 14" pleco now, who refused to eat in the beginning just kept moving around, away from the agressive fish. I left him be. It was a flowerhorn, who is VERY aggressive, and took bites out of his fins. My pleco still managed to eat tho. During that time he didn't have a cave to take cover. Long story. He's away from that lil' meanie now tho

I currently have new plecos. Some I ordered online here. They are stuck on the driftwood, which can't be their only source. I don't shut off the lights completely in the tanks. I noticed at feeding time they will suck up on the gravel/sand/bare bottom the bloodworms/mystis shrimp/brine shrimp being fed to the other fish. I put in 2 big pieces of cuke in 3 out of 4 tanks every other night only to wake up in the morning and its all tore to shreds.

they really just have to adjust and have a variety of food offered. If the pleco refuses, try puttin him in a seperate smaller tank so you can assess how he's eating, and what. I've had to do that with another pleco

thanks for the tips :) maybe u could help me identify wat species he is? i have a link to the picture on the first page of this thread but its very blurry..its the best i could do with this ****ty camera phone
