My Polypterus Collection!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks

and a sad update.....
the Delhezi has been M.I.A. the last 2 days, so my worst fear may have came true.... I believe my Ornate has eaten the Delhezi due to the small size.
I SHOULD have put a divider in the tank, but me being lazy decided to wait it out and this is what happened..... just my luck huh?

anyway I will get a new one someday. Tomorrow when I go to work I will check our availability list and hopefully order me a new one. I also might try to order in some Retropinnis as well.

Two new additions to my collection. Polypterus Delhezi and Polypterus Ansorgii! I have never seen an Ansorgii outside of pictures so I was super excited that we got two of them in store today.
My collection now consists of:
-Polypterus Endlicheri Endlicheri
-Polypterus Senegalus Senegalus
-Polypterus Bichir Lapradei
-Polypterus Ornatipinnis
-Polypterus Senegalus Senegalus var. Albino
-Polypterus Delhezi
-Polypterus Ansorgii

Nice update!
Just keep them separated this time!

And just so you know, yours isn't an Ansorgii, it's a cross breed of Endlicheri x Ansorgii.

you sure? How can you tell? I'm not doubting you, I'm just not sure. He's still small and all the pics I've seen look more like Ansorgii, but that's just my perspective. Either way, I like it. He's about 3" maybe nearing 4"

Ansorgii pure bred has only been done once by Kamihata Industries.
They had a darker clay like appearance, compared to WC Ansorgii, and juveniles had a very pronunced wedge head.
As they grew their colors and head shapes pretty much grew into what you normally expect of an Ansorgii.
These juveniles were being sold for as much as Wild ones at one point.

These fish all came with certificates, and have not been bred again since.
The ones that are still floating around are all of adult size now or thereabouts.

Kamihata also bred the original Ansorgii x Endlicheri too, followed by Indonesia and Thailand.
All new small CB Ansorgii around right now are hybrids.

Kamihata are no longer Selectivly breeding F1 fish anymore, and have pretty much "sold out" and gone into mass farming.

"Dory-K", "J-1" and another breeding group are currently attempting breeding pure Ansorgii and Congicus.
If you know anything about breeding groups, you will understand that if "Dory-K" haven't done it yet, most likely nobody else has.
If they did, there would be a big song and dance about it like it was when Kamihata managed it, and fish would come certificated (kind of like a breeders "rep points").

All that said, Ansorgii x Endlicheri doesn't mean rubbish fish, just not true breed.

Here is a Juvi Kamihata F1 (Pure) certificated Ansorgii. (check out the unique juvenile wedge head.)

Here is a Japanese Ansorgii x Endlicheri breed: (body and head differs, shape and colours/patterns)

Here is an unknown (possibly Thai) Ansorgii x Endlicheri:
IMG_2654.JPG

Kamihata in their 2008 newsletter explained how male Ansorgii in captivity showed normal levels of breeding willingness, while females were very withheld and unwilling and responded badly to hormone treatment/injections.

Endlicheri on the otherhand were always willing (as we all know, they are the rabbits or the fish world when it comes to breeding) so mixing the two for breeding was very successful.
This is why they are now mass produced all over Asia.

The Kamihata F1 pure breedsm were all natural spawns, no hormones, and breeding wasn't done by cup mixing method, as this was found to be unsuccessful thus far.

Great info, TGM! :D

Ok now seeing those I can see the difference. I would think mine was WC though due to the cheap price because where I live CB ones are always more expensive. Are there no WC true Ansorgii out there? I'm just curious. I did read somewhere that they were a rare species and most mature adults are only found in museums and/or public aquariums. Awesome info though man thank you for that. I'm always glad to learn something new especially since I work at the store I get all my stuff from I can bring the knowledge to work with me lol

Fixed
-Polypterus Endlicheri Endlicheri
-Polypterus Senegalus Senegalus
-Polypterus Bichir Lapradei
-Polypterus Ornatipinnis
-Polypterus Senegalus Senegalus var. Albino
-Polypterus Delhezi
-Polypterus Ansorgii x Endlicheri

Yours is 100% CB due to the size and the fact that these hybrids are man made, not natural hybrid.
The reason yours was cheap is because it is a hybrid that is mass farmed. (there are lots of them)

WC are not caught as juveniles, so you will only ever see large WC.
Long ago WC were considered "rare" and very few existed in home aquaria.
This is not the case anymore.
WC Ansorgii are availible on the trade now. Easy to find in Asia (cheap here in Japan and some other parts) Maybe not so easy outside Asia, but not too difficult to get ordered in.

Always good to see people like yourself who work in an LFS and actually give a damn about learning the fish!

TGM, you truly are an Encyclopaedia on Polys.... Almost every day we learn so much from you... Thank you for sharing your knowledge... ;)
