Had no idea that the patterns were different!o_O All I knew was that the Faranah was darker. lol. That's good to know the base color is COMPLETELY different.

yay! I remember you sharing this picture with me before! Totally forgot about the bellies being different.

Would have guessed the first one as Faranah due to color. The head shape looks more slender though compared to the two Faranahs. Is there a give away with the patterns?
IMO, you can't look at color alone or headshape alone or pattern alone when trying to ID these lower jaw variants. Color will be affected by different substrate and each fish will have a slightly different shade. Headshape will also vary. Same with pattern, sometimes some with oddball pattern(looking like another species).

clm08k clm08k the way to tell the difference from the pattern are
Faranah lap they have a vertical pattern toward the middle of the body going to the tail similar to a endli but the patterns are closer together.
Koloton have the middle straight horizontal pattern in the body and the top pattern have vertical broken pattern similar to ansorgii.

+1 i have two faranah lap, one with high contrast that makes it darker and the other one with lighter shade. Both of them have different pattern from each other.

Finally got my project finish after two months:)
I can only set the pump at 4 setting, max is 10 setting but im still running 1553.3 gph but with all the elbow maybe im running 1300gph.

Dude, i really like this idea for an overflow! How come ive never seen this style before?? I might try something like this. How hard was it to set up?

Really easy, J jaws7777 help me out on this, i just run two 1 1/2" pipe with some union cause the bulk head is 1 1/2" big, then thebreturn is 1" pipe.

Thanks man. Where did you pick up the hob box from?

Good point. All of those do sound like variations of a species. Never thought about that. You are totally right. Hmm maybe that's why I am still struggling with the IDs for a lot of the LJs. Thank you guys for being patient with me! There's a lot of poly characteristics to learn. :p

Oh okay! I think I see what you are talking about with the vertical patterns! Thanks for posting the pics.

Just remember these are all just Polypterus bichir lapradei from Guinea. (Koliba/Koloton has not been proven but safe to assume so) :)

DRteugelsi DRteugelsi they work well but for your big tank i would stay away from hob overflows for a few reasons.

You'll probably need two or 3 of them to achieve a decent gph which could get costly.
Your new tank is in the house right ? If so then i would really consider doing traditional overlfows because of the potential the hobs have for flooding and lack of emergancy drains.

Ive been running the eshopps overflow for over 2 yrs now when i converted the tank from canisters it was my only option as fish were in the tank and i had no where to put them. Some members cautioned me about the hob's but i had no other options.

Last summer the tank flooded while i was away thank god it was in the garage lol. These hobs have a u tube that carries water from the tank into the overflow and if that tube somehow ever loses siphon there is nothing to take on the flow from your sump. The pump will drain the sump into the main tank and eventually overflow it. Im still using it but am super nervous about having it in the house. Eventually if i can spare some $$$ i'd like to upgradethe 150 to another 300 and set up dual herbie drains like i have in the poly tank.
