Put some water lilies in pots, plant them in a pot with dirt/with a inch layer of something like river rock to keep the dirt in. If u plant enough plants u wont have an algae problem. Then disconect your waterfall & if u have a pump in the pond put a riser on it. In the winter (if it gets cold there-in Idaho it gets -10 to -20 sometimes, & I will have snow in my front yard from nov to april sucks) throw in a horse troff heater. Not the floating kind u need the kind with a cage around it. Then when its cold quite feeding...if u feed in winter when cold the food will rott in then bellies because their metabolism slows way down. Hope this helps ive had my pond for over 12 years and some of the original fish r still in there.

I haven't had the best of luck with plants...I had some water hyacinths sp? and they all died :nilly: I think I would prefer fake plants....and they don't die in the winter

Get some Water Hawthorne. It does fine in the winter. It will actually bloom in the winter, right through the ice! At least mine does. You can see shots of my pond in the dead of winter, in the wintering over thread.

Water Iris will also winter over, just fine, completely encased in ice. As long as it isn't frozen too long. But if the fish can survive, those plants will.
